    I have to go with (eddied) your over thinking this. Tape it off, chop it then polish it square. It,s stainless.

    two pages of responses on how to hold a work piece! yipes! i`m not a machinist- but i could figure that one out.

    Cut it very slow with a hand held pipe cutter, (Large tubing cutter) while holding the other end with a punch in the joint.

  6. I know more than a few machine shop owners that I'd hardly call machinists, although they are at their machines every day, lol.

    Like anything else, some guys are artists, others blunder and hack their way through every job they do.

    Beat me to it. I do this all the time and not only will it not slip, but it's won't mark, either.
     
  8. are you going to have enough threads left inside the tube after shortening it , or will you have to tap it deeper?

    Use brass shim stock or lead sheet. Lead works best it is very soft and will not mar the finish. We use it when clamping rifle barrels in a fixture to unscrew them,it won't scratch the blueing.

    Haven't measured them all yet, but if I need to go deeper should probably do it before shortening?
     
  11. I was taught to use a collet for this type of machining.
     
  12. You'll be ok re-tapping for more depth after the cut.

    Depending on tap design - body diameter same or more as the threading section - you may not be able to go deeper until after the cut.

    Since you're only cutting a 1/4" off, the threads may be deep enough as is.

    Measure thread length on bushing male end and compare to thread depth on the four bar's proper.

    Why are you shortening the 4-bars?
