i got this 32 chevy coupe and it was cut and ripped to pieces!! im putting this thing together and need some measurement to keep the body square! i need the measurement of the rocker gap(between bottom of door and cowl). also need the measurement across from driver to passenger behind the doors on the bottom and the rear lower pan measurement. basically i need subframe dimensions....can anyone help??? thanks hambers
What are you doing to replace the wood? Dimensions from a replacement wood kit might help you. They tended to fall apart on their own once the wood rotted out.
there isn't any wood left! i'm goin to make a steel skeleton, but need these couple of measurements before i can get started.....
I have a 31 and can take some measurements for you. I won't be home for a little bit to do so but I'll try to remember.
I'm in the same boat with a 32 chevy 5W.I think I'll set the cowl square and level, build an inner structure from steel tube, hang the doors and go from there. Some numbers would help but I think the door gaps will lead you down the right path without real measurements.Good luck with your build.Love the Chevys.
I'll get ya some measurements some time today. Mine is close to right on the money. Also have 32 parts for sale.
Best thing to do is mount the cowl to a 32 chevy frame and go from thier. Your basicaly starting from scratch. If you dont have or going to use a original frame, than build a body dolly and go from thier. Tack everything first untill its all together and square before you go crazy and remember the old cars were not perfect from one side to the other. Good luck.
What I would do is build a plywood base for it to sit on. Then tack all the parts together including the doors, making sure all the body seams, and trim lines fit well. When you get it to this shape, your measurements usually are pretty close to stock. Then you can start to build a lower structure around the base and work up from there. You should have your doors hung and square by the hinges, with new steel frame before you do any of the above, that way when you pop the welds on the doors they should open and close properly. But don't pop the doors until your happy all the inner stricture is done. don't ask me how I know...John
Hello, what I did with my 31 was mount the cowl to the chassis first. Then I beafed up the door jambs with some 1" steel tube so as to hold the weight of the doors. I plan to suicide the doors so I just tack welded the doors to the cowl using some spacers I made to keep gaps right. Then tacked thr quarters and rockers on using more spacers. I didn't have any measurements but just made sure everything looked right. Worked for me anyway. Good luck.
i am going to build my own frame! so cant go that route. somebody has these measurements!! just need the measurements from left to right(pass. to drvr.) on th bottom behind the doors. thats all........................
My neighbor did the same thing with a '31. He replaced all the wood framing with 1 x 1 tubing, then built his own chassis, suspension, etc. He altered the roof and rear fenders but the main body, hood and grille shell should be close to original dimensions. I sent him an e-mail with a link to this thread and I'll check with him tonite to see if we can get you some measurements.
are the body mounts still there? I have my 32 frame sitting and could measure if it helps. I might be seeing my 32 body soon.....what do you mean 'bottom behind the doors' bottom corner of the doors side to side? or the body behind the doors end to end?
no body mounts in it...i mean the panel in back of the doors below the 5th windows, at the very bottom. i need the measurement inside to inside from passenger side to driver side... thanks
Just talked with my neighbor. He's mounting the stock (kinda) front fenders 'n boards back on his car after running 'cycle front fenders for a while. His car (a '31) has some modifications to it but the one measurement you need may still be close. He started with much the same panels you have although he DID have a rear deck lid. The deck lid on his car fit above the rear cowl and fenders but he mod'ed it to fit flush. Also cut the lower 2" off his doors due to rust, and made different hinges rather than use the exposed type. Lots of other mods on the car but maybe you'll get a chance to see it soon since I think I've convinced him to sign on. There's a little cruise-in just South of us Friday night and there's usually another '31 there. If he makes it tomorrow nite I'll try to get some measurements from that one too. Hang tite.
I am in the same boat.. I have an idea.. make it a coupster and sell me you roof!! look cleaner then mine.
I never saw the measurements can someone post them agin i just got a 32 chevy 5 window and its kinda tweeked thanks
I gotta 32 chevy 5 window comming in sat the 14th, as far as I could tell when I went to look at it most of the wood is still in it, and the steel is all there as well. Let me know what measurements you need, and I will try to obtain as many as I can.
I don't know about the bottom. but at the body line right behind the doors it is 59 inches. At the body line on the cowl where the stainless cowl band fits it is 36 inches.
my 32 is channeled to i may have tweeked it a bit. at the bottom of body where rocker meets is 45 3/4.
Hi guys I'm Also trying to do something very similar with my 31 coupe. May I also get the measurements of the deck lid? Also it would help to get the measurements of the deck lid opening (quarter Panel to quarter panel upper and lower) Thanks
I have a '32 five window that is channeled so I may not be of too much help, but maybe between the bunch of us we can figure it out. I'll take a couple measurements and let you know what I get.
