I am trying to remove the c clips on my 02 ranger axel.I can not push the axel in far enough to release the clips. It is very close to coming out. Am I missing something?
well... see.. your first problem is that it was made AFTER 1962 your second problem is that its a FORD made AFTER 1962 actually i have to say 71' cuz my rearends out of a 71 mustang haha ive got a buddy who works at Ford, ill give him a call and let you know no hard feelings
if i was going to go with my spidey senses, id agree with gtnrkix and say that it was just bound up, just like it gets bound up pulling it out, same thing. try taking an axle puller and hitting it in and out a few times. or just a hammer!! make sure u put ur lugnuts back on if u use a hammer though
I have cleaned both ends and slamed the axel in and out several times.I think there is something that needs to be removed but I dont see anything that looks like It will come out.
Sounds like you have a Level II 4wd package ? on your Ranger if it has the block for the carrier instead of the crosspin, that was a special carrier. Unlike any other 8.8 rear. I've only had 1 apart in the time i've had at the dealer. Thats probably been 4 or 5 years ago. I don't think there was anything special I can remember anyway. Sometimes it's just a matter of getting the back side of the wheel stud hitting something. See if thats were its hitting and rotate the axle shaft to clear it. Did that have the exciter ring for the abs on the carrier still or on the axle ends?
You need to pull the 5/16 bolt from the pin. Pull the pin. Remove rear wheel as and drums. Push in axles. Remove C clips.
ok so we have a ford tech sitting next to me...his first question..."did you take the pin out?"..."the back of the hub where the studs go into, make sure they are not pushing up to the brake hardware, if they are they wont let it push in far enough".
I agree, Im a ford tech and have had to rotate the shaft before to get the axle in far enough however, he is also right about carrier, try to have a buddy jam the axle shaft in and then use a skinny long screw driver to push the clips out. The factory lockers/posi can be a pain. If this doesnt help pm me and I will get you the info from the manual. Brad
if it's got a thrust block between the side gears I'm ***uming it's a locking differential probably an eaton, you'll need use a magnet to rotate the clip on the end of the axle until you can pull it straight out. it will only slide off the shaft when its at the proper angle
I found the key to the puzzle. I finely got the C clip pulled back enough to catch it on the plate that covered the spider gear. I attached an axel puller to the axel and slammed it a couple of time outward. I slid the axel back in and just had enough room to pull the clip. I think problem was I drove the axel in and it pushed the spider gear in where the clip could not come out. This setup is different than any I seen before. Thanks for all the info I though that I was going crazy.
