nothing now me being the nice guy i am i will come get both them peices of crap out of your way for free
Nice shine. Does that cost more? 5 bills, electric, water, mortgage,American Express, bar bill. YES ITS 500 AMERICAN BUCKOS.
Well then it sounds like you have a shell to work with , right ? $500 tops ! Common stuff that isn't popular is cheap junk ! Also does it come with a good , clean title ? RetroJim
Thinking about buying, not sure if I would keep it or turn around and sell for a little extra to fund other projects.
It's worth what you want to spend on it....not running , needs floors, I wouldn't pay more than 500., but don't buy it for that and plan on making a bunch on it...won't happen!
Where did the bids run out on eBay? Personally if I had it I'd be trying to get around $1200 out of it, advertised for more and willing to come down. That assumes the driveline is in similar condition - IE motor not running and probably set up - and that all the '42 specific stuff is there. Because let's face it, without the '42 stuff it may as well be a '46-'48 and unless it's a Fleetline or convertible they just aren't that desirable. That would make it like a $500 car.
'41-'46 very few differences, crome, parking lights, window trim. I have owned a '42 for 36yr's. I had a '44 2ton.
now I see that you are talking car not truck as I was. I do have a friend that had a 42 car. It was nice all stock, sold it for $15k
I had a '46 Chevy 2 door sedan, very very similar to this car which I sold this spring for $1000. It had all of it's interior intact, had glass in it, it was titled, and it had a motor in it that ran if you jumped the starter. So I would say that $500 would be a fair price for this car, considering what I got for mine. Fastbacks and coupes have a good following, but 2 door sedans are less popular. The stuff that is worth money on these cars is any optional trim or accessories, like grille guards and bumper wraps and skirts and shit like that. This car does not appear to have any accessory items on it, unless that grille guard is stock, and it doesn't look like it to me.
with a 42 its kind of like asking how much to have sex with a fat ugly chick... im mean nobody wants it but sometimes a man has needs, so the price can vary.
I could make a good living buying all these $500.00 cars from you guys and reselling. how is that car undesireable? tough crowd around here. how much would it be worth if you were trying to sell it? if that came up on the local Craigs list here I'd cancel everything and be over there cash in hand asap. $500.00 or even $1200.00 doesn't get you anything around here. you guys are actually selling buildable cars for 500 clams. PM me with a list. I go to craigs list every week or so and just start putting in years in the search in the cars and trucks section. I usually start with 1949 since that's my favorite, go to at least 54, then go back and start at 37 or so. nothing comes up for under a grand unless it is a stripped shell. even the off brands. if that were at the Turlock swap in January I bet the price would be $2500.00.
I can't argue much with that, most of the time the $500 guys must be smoking crack or something. But we have a '48 tudor - not much difference other than the grille and headlight bezels. In about the same shape, maybe better since it has paint and all the glass and if I remember right most of the floors too. No one's exactly beating a path to our door on it. Not even with a $1500 asking. So I can't see planning to get more than that for a '42, especially with the grille in need of big-$$ rechroming, or big-$$ replacement. Hell, we have a '40 tudor that runs and drives (stock 216) and has shiny paint and a new interior asking $5500 that no one's made an offer on. I suppose I shouldn't mention the '37 tudor that also runs, is blown apart in primer and had what little rot there was redone with EMS panels already, either. Again crickets chirp. So I'd say '40s Chevy tudors are not that desirable.
I agree with 49ratfink, where i live, you couldn't touch that car for $500.00! That definately is not an undesireable car! After seeing some of the cars at shows/cruise's around here (and photo galleries on the HAMB!) this would make a really nice car!!
It's worth 500 here in my part of the country...had a buddy who had a similar 42, 2 door sedan, complete with a subframe ...nicely installed. He couldn't get $1000, went to 750 and eventualy sold it after lugging it to swap meets.........got 500 and was happy to get it. That said? The complete 42 front clip might very well command 500 by itself. Find a 100 dollar 46-41 front clip for the remaining body shell and ask 500 for the car again. Disclaimer: Parts and cars [especially old 40s chevy sedans] sell for a helluva lot less in the midwest than they do on either coast or the deep south where there are rust issues. Also, a dollar is worth more in the midwest than elsewhere in the country... just a fact of life. This fact can work to an advantage for guys selling parts to coast dwellers..I know. I sell parts occasionally
The criteria for a car to build is very simple: If you like it and you want it and you can afford it and it is available then buy it and build. No matter what happens after that you have learned something, good or bad, about yourself, your skills, your tendency to pay too much attention to what other people tell you and not get to enjoy the first old car experience for a lousy $700 soaped on the side glass of a 42 Chevy 2door sedan. JUMP IN! The water's fine!
To add to the discussion, these are pictures of the '46 I sold for $1000. It had a '61 235 in it that ran if you jumped the starter, it was yard-driveable. It had a clean title too. It is true about values being different in different parts of the country. In the midwest (I'm in Wisconsin, the '42 in question is in Iowa) these cars are not very sought-after. But in California, there is a much, much stronger following, and it would command a much higher price there, especially being a '42. Virtually all of the parts I had bought for my '46 were sold to guys in California. That's why I still have to stick with the $500 value on the car. Maybe you could buy it, clean it up a little and make a couple hundred dollars on it, but I wouldn't expect to make more than that and you might have to sit on it for a while. If you're in Iowa trying to make some side money, you're way better off hitting some old junkyards, buying lots of parts and reselling, or buying rusty parts cars and parting them out.
If it was near me I'd consider it for $500 and build it like jebo's '41.The Chevys make the best taildraggers as far as sedans go IMO.
In general, 41-48 Chevies aren't particularly valuable, especially sedans. If you are buying it because you really like it, then great. But if you think you are going to turn it for a buck, I seriously doubt it. Think about it. How many sedans do you see for sale compared to how many turn up finished at car shows? Personnaly, I think the '42 has the best grille for the '42-48 cars. I would love to find a nice '42 fastback project.
