Found these Imperial valve covers at a swap meet today. Was thinking of giving the guy a call and ******ing them up if he still has them. Want to replace a set of cheesey chinese chrome ones, on a friends full fendered, open sides, '32 roadster. Are they worth $75 beans?? Seem very unique and those chrome ones always leak oil from the spark plug tubes. Sick and tires of cleaning oil off the fenders.(I know, it adds character) JT
Not to change your style or anything, but ever since I put on a set of O'Brien Valve Covers (cast) I've not had any leaks. The tubes actually sit down in the holes, and you don't need the rubber rings. It's also nice I can use Chrysler tubes on my Dodge. They're much more expensive of course. Three-hundred buck range. But if it leaks you hate, these look pretty neat and don't leak.
A little trick to keeping the tubes from leaking, when you are installing the seals on the tube, leave the seals a little low on the tube, just enough to start the spark plugs, fill the bottom lip of the seal from the outer edge to the lip that centers in the hole in the valve covers with a good gasket sealer, when you tighten the plugs the tube will pull down on the seals and hold pressure on them, I usually let the sealer cure before driving. I've been using this method for years (on plated valve covers also)and the only time they leak is when the tube seals start to get weathered or sun baked which is usually around the time it needs a tune up. I run in all types of weather with no hood, the sun does dry out all the rubber parts.
Very rare valve covers, they were only offered one year (1958). All Hemi Imperials '51-57 shared the common "Chrysler FirePower" valve covers with actual Chrysler cars. Definitely worth $75, probably closer to three times that. You should have gotten them-
I sold a single Dodge 241 for $75 a while back. Gotta think the Imperial ones are worth more than that, each, if they're decent.
You should have bought them on the spot. Consider yourself fortunate if he still has them, they usually go for quite a bit more than 75 bones.
Wow! Good price! Don't think twice. Go buy them. I have some sitting here next to my desk that I have in safe keeping for rechroming. They are cool friggin' covers! By the way, when you say "cheesey chinese chrome ones" what are you referring to?? I wasn't aware anyone was repopping valve covers for early Chryslers. What's the scoop with that?? Save those covers!!
