Anyone know anything about these? I'm considering trading for a project that has one. I'm not a Buick guy so any comments or thoughts are welcomed.

we've talked about them here before I think....they're neat little engines, they use the "modern" BOP bellhousing so they'll bolt up to a bajillion GM transmissions.

hint: to search for things like 300 that the hamb search might not find, use google and include the term jalopyjournal

  3. believe it or not, Wikipedia has a some good basics on it.

300's are based on the all aluminum 215. Good news is that the 64's have aluminum heads with much bigger ports than the 215. They went to the cast iron heads in '65.(65-69 Corvair) valves which are oversized will fit without much effort. Even with the cast iron block, the 64 300's are light--weigh only about 400 lbs fully dressed. As someone else said, they have a common GM bolt pattern unlike the oddball 215. Tubular headers are available from the later Range Rovers that are finding their way into junkyards at this point.

I think they are pretty neat engine........look like the bigger "nail valve" (i know,,I know everyone calls them "nail heads"........but they were FIRST known as nail heads because of the small valves looking like 'nails' )...but I digress.....what has been posted so far is correct. the heads did switch to iron in '65 and where changed in design for the 340 version in '66 and again in '68 for the 350. The aluminum 4 bbl intakes from '64 are (or used to be) sought after. I am putting a '67 340 with 'switch pitch' turbo 400 in my '54 GMC pickup project.........nuthin' wrong with SBC except they're everywhere......but here......
