After a visit with my uncle, ( a decorated viet nam veteran) He brought to my attention the wave of Iraq vets coming home and having to go into the Veterans hospital with major injuries as well as ptsd (post traumatic stress disorder)
He said that all these men and women have is the t.v and magazines to pass the time. The magazines provided at the hospital are publications like, people, us, and the usual supermarket rags. These are young men with love for cars and motorcycles. Alot of the older vets cant even afford to buy new magazines and they have to basically take what they can get. Im putting this out to everyone that could help by simply donating your old back issues of car and motorcycle magazines to the hospital for these brave young men. You dont have to agree with the government that sent them there but i believe that its very important to support the troops that sacrificed so much. This simple act of kindness and support can make a major difference in these men and womens lives.
Please contact us here and we will give an address to send your donation.
We will be going to the vets hospital in 2 weeks to drop off whatever we can raise. Thank you very much for your consideration.
We can also pick up substantial donations in the bay area to save on shipping.

    Respectfully,
    Road Lords C.C.

I've got a box full of them that my wife wants me to toss, but I think they're about to find a new home! I'll even pay the shipping! :)

PM me the details and i'll have them on their way.

Thanks for putting this together. Those folks need all the help they can get.

Hey Bob, this is a great idea. I've been sending them all over to the sand box. I hope some Hambers are kicking in? I've been putting the last couple boxes together this week. I think I'll have more than will fit. I'll get back to you. C'mon Hamber's give up some mags. They'll do more good there than on your dusty shelf.

I go the the Dallas VA for my medical needs. The next appointment I have, I will take some boxes of mags for them to place in the appropriate areas. I am Navy vet from 67-71 and draw my SS. Have no medical insurance and use the VA exclusively. Have gotten great care.

This is a very good idea, and thing to do. They are appreciated more that we can ever know. It dosent matter if its last months or 7 years ago. When I was overseas we'd read a news paper that was three weeks and and from a small town like it was the best thing goin. Thats because it was. Any Veterans hospital will welcome your donation. Actually, call your local VFW or American Legion and ask if they have a program like this. Youre doin God's work here.

I have several mags stored in plastic tubs that I'd be all to happy to give to whomever or wherever they would go other than in the trash
    sorted by titles

Called around once about a year ago and I could not at that time get anyone to accept them to give to Vets

Most of them are early 2000's up to 2004 or so then I ended most of my subs to them .

If anyone in the DFW area knows a place that will in fact take them and put them to good use I would guess I have 10 tubs , mostly Mopar mags

Very few HAMB friendly type mags

I would suggest donating the way I have for the last several years. I worked at Walter Reed Army Hospital for the last dozen years and they are constantly overun with soldiers and their families who appreciate the donations. All military hospitals have regular care package shipments overseas and you can contact them to include your items. Our last shipment was just over 1-ton(magazines,movies, phone cards, etc.)
Contact your nearest Military hospital to donate your items and car mags are just the tip of the iceberg to whats needed/appreciated. Try not to forget that at every military hospital there are also wards filled with children that adore having someone come play video games with them or bring them movies/toys.

  17. That's only half the story, my wife worked at a VA hospital (post op nurse) for a couple years. She really felt honored to work and be of service to veterans but after a couple of years of being forced to provide sub-standard work she started to burn out and left to work elsewhere. Simple things like snacks or soda pop between meals were not available for patients. Nurses willingly bought and provided candy which they purchased themselves. At first she was trying to get me to register with them and I politely ignored that request. About a year into her employment she was glad I never registered with the VA system. Lot of the old guys and I'm sure the new generation will be the same are because of PTSD living on the street and so when they finally end up in the hospital are in horrific condition. It was heartbreaking for my wife to leave after she realized that the VA system doesn't really care.

    My 2 cents

VFW's are sadly not of much help in some cases.
I pulled up the address and contact number for the closest Military Medical Center i'm familiar with who regurally ships overseas as well as having a constant flow of incoming soldiers/dependant families.

    Darnall Army Community Hospital
    Fort Hood, Killeen
    Telephone: (254) 288-8000

I know it's not exactly next door but I would hope they could accept a ups package. Attached is a link the the Fisher House organization who definitely can help anyone interested in donating.

Sorry for hijacking the original thread if i've stepped on any toes.

Cleaning out the storage unit tomorrow, Great idea with the magazines. It's the least
everyone can do for our fellow brother's and sister's who have sacrificed so much for
    this great country.

A good contact to help the veterans is the "Disabled American Veterans" (DAV). I'm a lifetime member and am blessed to have their help. Without them I'd be pretty much tied to the inside of my house, but through their generosity I've got a mobility scooter that gives me a chance to visit with my neighbors and cruise swap meets. I believe the VA medical centers all have a DAV office in them and they are always a great bunch of guys. Perhaps they can help you make the donations you'd like to make. God Bless you all for your generosity. -Mike

Thanks to everyone that donated their magazines. I'll be heading out to the Vets hospital at fort Miley in a coulpe of weeks to meet with the vets and pass along these generous donations. I cant tell you how thankful we are for your kindness. There is still time to get magazines to us, so dont hesitate. Its all for our wounded military so dig those old back issues out and hook up with us.
    Thanks again !

What's the deal with this guys, Are yall still doing it. I'm active duty Army SGT E5. I want to say thanks to everyone that has been doing this. I will be using the VA since I'm going through a medical board right now for cronic back pain and PTSD. If anyone is still wanting to donate in Texas and dont have anywhere to send them. I pass the fisher house everyday on my way to work. I can drop them off, and also my good friend goes to the VA in Temple so he could probably drop some off as well. Also if anyone knows of companys in texas that higher veterans let me know. I'll be out the army in about 6 months.
