star with the old time moonshine runners, the hopped up the cars to be faster then the cops, and that lead in to racing(nascar) if you can get of hold of Jr. Johnson he has some great stories from the good old days.

I dont know how to scan pictures but I have afew of the "hotrods" my grandfather built in the glades back in the 40s-50s . There cars werent low because of the roads or lack there of also there were alot of doors welded shut and cut down roadster style .

The 1928 Chrysler I have predates the moonshiners, but it was a east cost gin runner from "28-"34. Under the seats are wells that will hold quite a few quart jars. Plane Jane, larger cars were used, not to draw attention and to be able to out run the patrol cars. Map lights and false floors were standard equipment.

Im working on putting together a book about hot rodding in the south eastern states.

Im needing sources, history, pictures,,articles,,any type of documentation of what hot rodders were doing, building, customizing ,and racing in the hay day of hot rodding.

i know im young and this might be a big undertaking , BUT i have plenty of time and want to get some facts and do my research for this project

I know a man that did some hot rodding back in the 40's and 50's in the central Tennessee/north Alabama area. I'll see if he has any pics. I bought 100 old magazines from him years ago. You might also look up old dragstrips like Baileyton, Moulton, and Satellite that were all located in north Alabama. tnrotter

While it's hard to realize it now, there was no professional sports teams, of any type, in the former Confederacy before 1960. All that was available was College football & racing!
