    All depends on what wheel?

old skinny steelies with very little backspacing

deep dish mags or chrome reverse that stick out more

I am running Firestone Bias Ply 16 750 so the wheel I am looking for will be 40 ford style (aftermarket or what ever I can score) no wider than 5.5.. My hopes would be for a set of Torque Thrust D (grey center) and some redlines.. But I am gonna runn the steelies for now since I already have 2 and the tires...Sorry for the vague question...Ryan

Maverick's work good under the narrow framed 28-34 Fords.

    Wheels are 6" 15" with 235/75R x 15 tires.
They fit well with either 29 or 31 fenders.
    31 fenders are 1" wider.

    Early roll-out with 10" x 15" slot mags(3" backspace) and 31.50 x 15 tires - 31" tall fwiw.

These tires don't work with stock fenders.

Directly from the back with the 6" wheels and 235 tires.

The tires are hanging down cuz the car is up on jackstands.

This is about as low as the rear can go.

Car sits 1" higher now, rear suspension is set up so changes are easily made.

    I think this is a 31 fender.
I bought a pair that were 29 and 31 already bobbed.
The 29 fender on the drivers side fits the tire closely and looks good.

The white fenders shown above are 31's and at 1" wider, more room for a bigger tire.

I was running a Dana 44 out of a late 60's International Scout in my '29 2 door Sedan. Nice and narrow, fit well within the fenders, plus they come with factory posi and are virtually bullet proof. Unfortunately I don't have any pics.

OK... so I'll be the odd man out here.. My 30 coupe is running a 51 Pontiac rear diff with hairpins and coilovers. It was built that way when I got it and it seems fine. The car is running 14" rear tires, although I will be upgrading the rears to 15x10's asap.

The 8"ers out of 74-78 Mustang IIs, Pintos, Bobcats are the perfect width for A's with fenders. They have the 4 lug axles though, so the axles have to be redrilled to your pattern. I've used three of them that way.

Bronco rear ends work well, I have a 68 and it retains the ford 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. It is 57 hub to hub.

    65-66 Mustang 8" fits perfect.I sold a lot for A's.
strong Ford rearend,5 lug, good breaks and tons of aftermarket support!

    67-up is mostly too wide,as this was a bigger,wider Mustang model!(except MustangII 4 lug)

Ford 8.8 Explorer rearends fit too. Most are 3.73 posi which is great. From 92 oer something they even had disc brakes. But the pinion is a bit offset. But doable..

Did you get many Volvo 144's/142's over there? Around 54" wide and pretty stout. Apparently LS versions were done but seem pretty scarce.
Ford bolt pattern too. I have 2 waiting for projects....

were not blessed with them either..they all get melted down and sent over to china:mad::rolleyes:..finding a nice 8" or 9" rearend these days is getting more and more difficult as the years pass. especially the "one" you need

that Volvo alternative sounds like a good start, a bit skinny but it would work.

  18. I'm have a 66 fairlane 8" with 2:73 gears and it works ok. brakes are 10" x 1 3/4"

shame these days picking around in junkyards over here in Michigan all we have to choose from are 1990's shit box front wheel drive cars..the old iron is slowly getting very hard to find..,, and with the scrap prices we had near the end of last year it really took alot of good parts and sent them to the melters

I have a S-10 4x4 rear but I think it will be to wide, I have a line on a good S-10 2wd so I think I may go with it.. Unless I find a another that maybe stonger.... Thanks Guys keep em coming so I no what to look for in the yard on Saturday.. So staying somewhere in the 54 to 56 from drum face to drum face would be a good one to go with.. Is that the best way to measure?

    Yep.

    and Yep..
Thats how I measure anyways when it comes to fitting a rear into a project..if you know where your wheels are going to bolt up you can easily see what wheels and tire combos are going to fit, and what ones will look right and those that wont..JMO

See thats where I am going about this in a different way... I am building a frame for an already complete car. I am putting the chassis together first so i don't have to give up my running and driving car till the last minute.. So thats why I am asking what rear will work in advance..

I guess you need to work backwards. Start with the measurement between the outer guard edges
(anyone have that measurement for an A?)

Then select the wheel and tire combination allowing for some guard clearance, maybe an inch on each side.

Then measure the flange to flange measurement between the rims you would prefer to use.

That should give you a ball park starting figure to aim for when junk yard crawling and research.

you could use a old jaguar rear end like a 60's to 70's, i am sure they are 56 inches from hub to hub and it has independant suspension.

Yes that is correct. The Jag rears come in three widths, 53.25" 56" and 61.75" flange to flange.
