Oh man..sorry to hear that Rick..I hope it works out..Thanks

  11. Met Rick at the trans shop.

They had the trans pan pulled and no bad stuff seen within.

Not sure what else they did, an oil change for one and the truck seems to be ok.

Rick was ready to leave the motel at 1140 and run Route 66 to Seligman to avoid some of the long pulls up the hill on Hwy 40.

    1156 as I write this.

so what was wrong with the trans? I have the same truck and dealer tried to hose me for $2000.00.They said it was the converter and solenoid pack. Turns out it was just the solenoid pack. Had that done by a trained Ford Trans guy and a shift skit for $450.00. I also learned on this year truck the valves stick in the aluminum valve body. that was corrected when he replaced the valve and did the shift kit. Also bad solder joints on the solenoid. Now it is better than new and shifts like a truck should.
    hope this helps

  13. anything i have ever heard is the electronics will drive you crazy! had a buddy that his cube van would act up and found the problem to be the trans module was mounted right where a windshield drainwas above it. if you go online and google vehicle and problem recall info sometimes pops up thats how we found his trans proplem. the local shops wanted $2,500 bucks to fix it and it was expensive to fix as part was $800.

Just made it home to SC less than an hour ago... Many thanks to Denise Lady cruiser! connecting me with Jay C9 in Kingman AZ... Very Good people!
Also Thanks to the Guys at Kermit's Transmission service Mick and Julio were Great help to take me right in and get on the problem... I nursed it back across the country... had another code come up in Oklahoma... Stopped at a dealer and met great people... the owners son had some very nice cars and we talked a bit about them... no codes came up on the scanner... so I eased it along untill the overdrive gear went out.
I will get the truck to the Transmission shop on Monday it has a warranty from the rebuild last month...
I will let you guys know what happens there.
Thanks again to the help on the HAMB network!

The trans had some computer issues and Im sure the hills of California and AZ were not helping... we dropped the pan and changed the screen/filter fresh fluid and I eased it across the country...
I didnt want to get Hosed also and that was why I put the post on the HAMB... I know in every town someone knows who to trust and who to stay away from

  16. Been thinking about your problem.

I remember seeing a potential problem with using the hazard flashers either on the uphill or down hill.

    Forget which.

Ford should have a service bulletin on this.

Some kind of weird computer crossover that allows - I think - the converter to remain unlocked when the flashers are on.

Glad to hear you made it ok - with a bit of worry....

In case your truck has not had it installed yet. Ford has an upgrade kit for the controller on the side of the trans that makes them more reliable. Also they recommend a cooler change after a trans failure. You can't get all the crud out of the old one.

    Was wondering cuz I have a 2002 F-150 5.4 liter SuperCrew.

Interstate 40 headed East to Flagstaff Arizona ... that big long hill ( where the Grand Canyon train is ) is a tough hill. Last time I came thru there ... the wife and I saw 3 or 4 different vehicles sitting on the side of the interstae with problems. A believe the grade is at least 3 or 4 miles uphill.

Oh what memories :) Was I40 a divided highway in the mid 80s? My old man and I took a trip to Cali and took a similar route on our way home, in an off topic '81 Ford with a worn out manual trans. About 1/2 way up a hill like that (just outside Flagstaff) my old man downshifted and got the trans stuck "in neutral" (sounds weird but its kind of a long explanation about that trans and the way it worked -- this problem popped up a couple times in the past so we knew what the issue was as soon as it happened). Got the car in the other lanes and coasted back down until we hit a relatively flat spot, then pulled the car to the side. Pulled the trans out fixed the shifter and back in and on our way. We had it almost all put together when a cop stopped to see what we were doing -- sure he had a laugh when he found out we were pulling the trans on the side of the road :) Oh the memories of that trip.

    Rick,

This is Jeremy - You hauled the bubble wrapped subaru for me. I'm also a ford diesel nut. I know you have a fresh rebuild with warranty, but the Ford diesel auto guys on the net say good things about http://www.brianstruckshop.com/. Not cheap, but high quality rebuilds on the E40D/4r100. If you continue to have troubles and your current shop can't get it fixed.

    Good Luck.
    Jeremy

For all of them. Ford installed the improved controller on 2005 and up, or when doing warrentee repairs on the older ones.

  24. I met up with Rick and the rest of the one eyed wednesday morning hot rod breakfast crew and he says that everything has been worked out with his transmission man.

The guys going to get him back on the road soon and honor the warranty. HRP

In a few days I will give the transmission a test... I have a couple cars going to Texas, then one car back east... It seems to be good, but it did before also....
Keep my fingers crossed and Pray it is fixed!
