Want to convert the hood on my 49 chevy to open forward, does anyone make the mechanism that ya'll know of or do i have to fabricate it all? thanks
Fabricate it yourself. The right weight of gas Struts will hold it up. A bar through the lip of the hood and the front two fenders is an idea. Then throw a latch at top. Did mine and it worked out nice
I gotta tell you that there are alot of guys out there that will tell you that they can do it and it's either not so hot, or really, really pricey. If your fab skills are good, go to the junk yard and check out either a Buick Le Sabre with the foward tilt hood and buy the ***embly or study it. Old Saab Turbo's have 'em too. Best of luck!!!!
57' through '59 fords had tilt forward. Maybe you could fab something up with them. I'd also grab the release mechanism at the same time.
i made one for my falcon, check my album for my hinge pix *edit- i made my whole hood/fenders tilt, probably not what your looking for, sorry
This '49 was at the GG show in Pleasanton a few months back - I snapped some pics of the hood... hope this gives you some ideas.
I'd want to weld the hood into one piece or add some bracing to it first I think, there seems to be a lot of flex in them, unless it's just the hinges on my car.
find a old set of weights, remove the weights and use the bar and the clamps as a start..I have seen people use them for tilt front ends..just a cheap idea
if your fab skills **** auto loc makes a kit......never heard of anyone using it so i couldnt tell you about the quality i know alot of people that just use La Sabre hinges....but they were all on newer cars so im not sure how well it would work on yours
You need to look up el polackos hood on his truck.you wont find a better set up.its the only way to go.i tried to find the link but couldnt i know its here somewhere though!
I know the hood designs are different but here is how I did my 55. Get a hinge from a 90-92 Buick Park Ave. and make it work for less then $50.
Cleanest one I've seen. <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://static.photobucket.com/flash/input.swf" style="" id="IMGTag-code" bgcolor="transparent" quality="high" name="IMGTag-code" wmode="transparent" allowfullscreen="true" swliveconnect="true" allowscriptaccess="always" flashvars="ipt=%5BURL%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fs206.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb93%2FELpolacko%2FMy%252063%2520Ford%2520F100%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DHoodsequence001.flv%5D%5BIMG%5Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fi206.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb93%2FELpolacko%2FMy%252063%2520Ford%2520F100%2Fth_Hoodsequence001.jpg%5B%2FIMG%5D%5B%2FURL%5D&trk=image_code_click_FULLVIEW_IMG&width=175&height=21&color=#E0E5E3&border=#141414&cont=IMGTagContainer" height="21" width="175">
All the big Beemers have them, and everything unbolts, even the hinges. I think I'd go that route on my 51 Ply if I hadn't already built the tilt front end.
If you dig through the pictures, there are a few shots of how I did the hinge system for my truck: http://s206.photobucket.com/albums/bb93/ELpolacko/My 63 Ford F100/ I did a 55 Studebaker a while back: And we just wrapped up a full one piece front end on a 53 F100 that needs to get videoed. Maybe I will shoot it in the morning and show some of the bracketry we made for it too.
WE have used the Buick hinges on several low riders we've built, they work good. However, Elpolako's set up is way cleaner.
