    Dan Miller and Gene Adams 354 sponsored by Hot Hemi heads just took third place in the Popular Hot Rodding Engine Masters dyno challenge. For those of you whe are not familar with it it's a street type engine dyno challenge. Big changes this year are allowing multiple carburetion (tunnel rams and webers) newer motors (LS chevy engines, new hemis and Ford OHC modulars 2V or 3V) and fuel injection.

    For these guys to do so well against many more modern engines and builders with very deep pockets is outstanding! Here's the blurb from the website

    The Hot Heads Research / Gene Adams Performance engine was a real treat to see, an early Chrysler Hemi displacing 365 cubic inches and sporting four down-draft two barrel carbs on an individual runner intake manifold. During the warm-up pulls, the engine showed amazing performance, especially considering its antique origins. Even though the team speculated that there were gains to be made by calibration changes, the engine was not altered in any way for the eliminations. The engine pulled cleanly through the final pulls and posted a score of 2,598.6 to move it into the current third place position in the standings.

    When you look at these dyno numbers remember they are AVERAGES from 3000-7000 rpm, not peaks and these are street type engines with I believe max of 11.5 comp ratio.

    Those are pretty impressive numbers from a 354 bored out.

    here is a plug for me see the one i have for sale.

    bluebolt ... thanks for posting this ... very cool!

    I'm curious what 4x2 setup they are using ... and what carbs? (Stromberg 97's, BG Demon 98's, or ???).

    Wow, what a great looking engine. Performs as well as it looks apparently. Those engineers knew what they were doing back then.

    The Hemi held on for 3rd going into the finals tomorow, the Kaase 429 Boss took the sixth spot.

    They tried a lot of different carbs and manifolds.
    Many people thought the Webers were a little small for that motor.

    Nice to see a "vintage" hemi and Y-block showing up the newer stuff.

    Ted Eaton's Y-block put up some pretty good numbers too.

    Here is link to some nice reading about Gene,
    Several decades (back to the 50's) of making lot's of power and going fast!

    This is about his injected nitro motor.....

    "When the nineties rolled around one of Gene&#8217;s potent power-plant's was in the car of Roger Odell with Ed Vickroy driving, due to the fact Don Enriquez had not ac***ulated enough points. While running at the NHRA World Finals in October 1992 they set a new A/Fuel speed record at 253.16. A very interesting side note to this record is the fact that it won the NHRA's "Run of the Year" for 1992. The interesting part of that is this was the same year that Kenny Bernstien made the first run over 300mph. The fact that the car, powered by Gene's motor bettered the old record by more than 20mph faster than anyone had ever gone in the blown alcohol cl***, prompted NHRA to award them with the distinction of the Best Run of 1992."

    Yep I should mention some more "old" engines. Besides the 354 Hemi and the Y block there were the following:
    Two traditional Pontiac engines,
    Three 426 based Hemis including one with a cross ram
    A 471 cubic inch Mopar "B"
    Three Boss 429 engines,
    One 427 Ford SOHC
    One 427 Ford wedge
    One 400 Olds

    Here's the Gene Adams / Dan Miller (Hot Heads) 2007 Engine Masters Challenge entry:

    The 335ci HEMI (a 1955 Chrysler 331ci block) had a very respectable score of 2329.6 ... but
    didn't make it into the final six.

    This is the first year for efi, and multiple carbs, IIRC.
    Dan and Gene tried tunnel rams, with different carb combos,
    single 4 bbl, and IR with different carbs.
    Different roller cams, different headers, etc.
    LOTS of work, trying to optimize the score for this years rpm range.

    The finals were run today. Gene and Dan ended the compe***ion in 3rd place overall. Todays score was only .40 points different from yesterdays qualifying score.

    The final six actually finished in the same order that they qualified. I am sure Dan will have some great stories to tell when he gets back. Hopefully they get some good print when PHR does the complete article.

    They really struggled with the weber A/F during testing. I dont think they touched them at all once they got to the compe***ion.
