recently i have purchased a 46 ford pick up its a half ton truck. it has a open style drive shaft. bolted to the banjo rearend. just wondering if this was stock or did someone do the open driveline conversion on it? i do not know alot about the banjo rearends. also it is missing some brakes on the rear end where could i find parts for this rearend? since im guessing oriellys or autozone probably will not carry something so old thanks for all the help The Rookie
that is what they came with and try Joblot that is where I got all my parts for my 46 Ford pickup the number is 1-800-221-0172 and I talk to James he is very helpful
It is stock, 1942-1947 pickups had an open driveshaft banjo factory. Brakes will work off any earlier Ford, 1939-1948.
thanks alot guys. ill have to get with joblot soon. now just need to find out how to make this 49 flathead run right so i can drive it.
Yeah, that's the way '42-'47s were built. Just remember (in case you've got some idea of using that rearend somewhere else), the parallel rear springs are what keeps the axle from winding up (or in other words, they absorb the torque reaction that the torque tube normally handles.).
The 'U' joint yoke on these are not splined to the pinion shaft, but are wedged onto a keyed, tapered pinion shaft. Be sure to check backlash before you go too far. Many have worn their crown & pinion gears to razor sharp and are therefore trash. No one repros these gears for the '42-'47 P/U. The torquetube gears are still available from several different venders. These gears do not interchange with the open drive gears.
.006" to .010" measured tangent off the key located on the pinion shaft. This measurement is adjusted by playing with very thin "shim" gaskets where the side bells bolt to the banjo housing. Have fun getting this right - there is a lot of fiddling around. Remember to keep some carrier bearing prelaod - you do not want these bearings to be loose.
