Cut floor at body edges, lower body, weld back together. Presumably any filler is done with the same gauge sheetmetal as the floors.
You really don't need to channel a Kustom. Most Kustoms ( and they are almost always 1936-up) have a body/frame/suspension design that lets you moderately, and even more than moderately, lower the car enough for a good stance. Some easy to do suspension mods are all that's needed for a moderate to medium lowering. More radical lowering might include C-ing a chassis, traditionally. Channeling was done mostly to older cars, late 20's-1930's vintage, because the body sat high up on top of the frame. Later car began to be "channeled" from the factory, in that the body, rockers, to be specific, partially, or fully covered the frame. Some vehicles are candidates for channeling, such as 50's GM or FOrd pickups, due to frame/body design.
thanks for the info. still figuring out the route i want to go. have to do the floors anyway so thats why im thinkin channel.
i just did the floors in my car and thought the same thing, if you really look at it, its gonna be a pain in the ass channeling the body is the easy part your gonna have to move the fenders, bumpers, steering, then your gonna lose hear room inside so if you ever want to chop it your not gonna be able to chop it much. you have to move the fuel tank...atleast i was going to have to you also have to watch how high your motor is gonna be i would have had to cut my hood to fit a mormal air cleaner on it, my brake and gas peddal would have had to been moved.....its tons of work......just chop it and bag it, like someone else said it comes half ass channeled from the factory just notch it and lover it or bag it
i channeld my 57 belair 2 inches, it really was a major pain in the ass. the car is bagged and lays frame. i did the channel so the rockers would sit right on the ground. all the floor supports under the floor were cut as well as the floors, the whole trunk pan was moved up, steering colum was redone, bottom part of the firewall was cut, and with it being bagged the front inner wheel wells were removed and the rear wheel wells were cut out and moved up. also had to make a new driveshaft tunnel. i did mange to find an air cleaner set up that fits under the hood, barely. and yes, the bumpers have to be moved down but i havent gotten there yet. it's a pain in the ass, BUT WORTH IT!
I was checkin his 57 album just b4. Its rad, but its not gonna be loved here, at least by many. I like it, i see lotsa potential in that thing. Twisted, what are you workin on?
I wouldn't mine channling my 54 chevy car. The rockers are higher than the frame also I only have about 4 1/2 inches under the front cross member so no more suspension lowering.
thanks for the help. im workin on a 54 chevy 210. its already bagged and i have to do the floors anyway. i really want it to lay rocker and i already have the body off. its a full build im doin and i dont mind all the work, it will be worth it when its done!
Some guys find a latter model frame with the same wheel base and put their body on it. Cut out your floor and use the floor from the late model, if your going to channel it anyway. Better ride steering and brakes.
