I've just moved back to Australia and am looking for places, websites etc where I can get up to speed on the ins and outs of owning, running and building hot rods in this neck of the woods. Hopefully some of you Ozzie Hambers can help me. I'm also trying to figure out where to live so any idea where the hot beds of hot rodding are? (Besides Melb and Sydney) Is there much going on in Southern Queensland and Northern NSW? Thanks in advance for any help.

  3. Hello Simon,

    Welcome back to Oz.

Cword's on the money with the HRI site. I'm on there too.

Melbourne, of course, is the centre of the best hot rod scene in Oz. After all, we just had over 2000 rods & kustoms thru the gates at John's Picnic at the weekend (see the Picnic post by Aushotrods). Castlemaine ain't far from here and, well, Sydney sucks goats balls......

  4. Welcome back.......personally, if I was to have a choice, I'd go to Melbourne or Brisbane.

    * Brisbane has great weather and an active 'cruise' scene
    * Melbourne seems to have a wealth of great cars and people, although the weather is a dogs breakfast (although in hindsite....maybe there's just more nice cars!!)

Rego in QLD is .......debatable.... (not keen on the volume of politics involved) [IMG]

Rego in NSW 'good' (although, depending on who you ask marginally better than Qld)

Rego in Vic seems to be the 'fairest'

NOTE: these are only my opinions....rego sux, just some areas suck more than others.

    I agree with peddro,

but sitting here its pissing down rain and I drove the roadster home in a deluge from a swap peddro and I went to today, so lets break it down in victoria for you

last weekend, Johns picnic supposedly 2000 cars of all shapes and sizes, not JUST rods

today, is Melbourne cup a big horse race here , think ascot or the kentucky derby, so there was a public holiday so we have an excellent hot rod swap

this weekend, bright, one of the BEST hot rod runs around.

and the weekend after , bendigo swap ,the second biggest swap in victoria. so three weeks and a heap to do...

let you make your mind up [IMG]

Yeah, I guess Victoria is the choice, living in England would have prepared you for the weather. [IMG]

Just what I was going to say. [IMG]

Go to the hot-rod.com.au forum and do a search on rego. You'll read all you need to know, then some.

Thanks for the help guys, that website is excellent and I'll be pouring over it just as soon as I have long term access to the web. I think I'll stick witht the Qld + Northern NSW areas as I've had enough shit weather to last me a lifetime. Plus I grew up in Melbourne so I know how miserable it can get. As for my car I'm hoping it will sail through any rego hassles as it's all original model a and is registered as such. All the numbers match and I've got the rego papers from England. The only modifications are to the motor and the addition of Hydraulic brakes. Surely I'll be able to register it without too much drama. I bloody hope so. Even if I do have to put on some bloody ugly cycle fenders. Are they really super strict on the fender laws here or can you get away without them?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm just keen to get on and get going.
    Cheers

Maybe....but we don't have a parade down here to celebrate sucking balls, like Sydneysiders do. [IMG]

  13. Hey Simon,

Come to Melbourne - lots of nice cars, nice guys and alot of rod shops...

I've been a fan of your art work for a while and would love to get one or two of your pieces!

On that basis.....I'd go northern NSW purely because of the rego thing. Full rego (with cycle gaurds) should not be a problem.
I'f you get relatively close to the border you can still participate with the QLD scene.

PM me if you'd like some more info, or qld'ers to talk to....

    Cheers,

Good choice I live on the Tweed, it is not the hot bed of rodding like Melbourne/Castlemaine but it has its moments [IMG] .
    Events:
    Toowoomba Swap Meet Febuary
    Brisbane Hot Rod Show May
    Wintersun May/June
    Greazefest July/August
    Dragstrip 500 September
Speed on Tweed September (Australia's Goodwood)
These are some of the major events around here.
As some of the guys said before HRI Benchracing is damn good place for info on Oz rodding
