The only one I have been able to locate is on the "A" piller drivers side mid way between the door hinges on a riveted tag. Can someone tell me if there is s number on the frame (chassis) ?
who knows. I could never find mine on my '54 chevy truck or the '54 donor cab I had. I tried to research it and some said it is stamped on the frame right before the firewall, but I couldn't find that either.
The engine number is probably what was used as the VIN. That was normal up through 54 and even later in some states. My 53 used it, my 41 and 47 used it, and the 54 a friend had also used it. I had to have the 53 inspected when I changed engines and only then did they take the number off the tag on the door post. Similar problem with Chrysler products too. Good luck.
I have found some #s on a frame i cut up and used pieces out off. but they where so far gone i could not even get a run reading off them. i dont even know if it was the vin or not.
Some pretty sketchy answers so far. No offense guys, but anything more definate? If it were right on the A pillar, I wouldn't be asking. Not trying to be a prick, but I NEED TO KNOW. Not guess. Too much at stake for guessing here. I don't wanna buy this thing if it's got issues
I know the vin on a 53 PU is on the drivers door A pillar, just like Solidaxel said. That's where mine is.
Well you're a little sketchy in your details of the truck and title. What model truck is it? Far as I know every model in those years the factory location of the serial number is the driver's side door opening between the hinges. But if yours is something strange it may be different. Post a scan of the title and I can tell you more and the serial number from the motor and the numbers and a photo of the serial number plate. Some of these trucks were titled off the engine number and some off the serial number plate. Which was yours? The rules do and did vary from state to state and of course have changed over time.
Well, well, well. Of course if I had one, and it didn't have a number on it and I told you that, would that be a sketchy answer? If I had one and the engine serial number was the number on the title from my state would that be a sketchy answer? First of all there was no such thing as a VIN on a 49 Chevy truck when it came from the factory. Universal VIN s became standard decades after '49. That truck might have NEVER HAD A VIN. It most likely was licensed under the motor serial number. Then, some DMV might have designated the motor serial number as the VIN to meet their catalog/filing/title needs. In the years before '49 and after, the Navajo tribes all bought literally multi-thousands of chevy pickup trucks and never even had license plates on them from the time they were new until they went to the scrap yard. They used window stickers to identify them. Same with military, USAF used '49, '50, '51, etc. etc, etc. blue chevy pickups on the flight lines with only numbres were GSA catalog plates on the dash and yellow serial numbers stensiled on the doors.
its for sure on the on the driver side front door pillar its a 3x4 tag. it will have G.V.W and some more information on it
Finding the VIN All trucks should have a body serial number tag on them somewhere with the serial number and gross vehicle weight (GVW) on it. On the pre-'39 trucks, start by looking at the dashboard or inside / outside of the firewall. For the '39-'46, it should be found on the right side of the cowl, under the hood. Advance-Design ('47-'54) and later trucks should have a plate located on the left front door post. The GVW is stamped as 46 (hundred pounds) on the '40's trucks. Don't confuse this as being the year of the truck. The serial number is not stamped on the frame of '30's, '40's, and early '50's trucks. It may be on the frame of late '50's trucks near the steering box. 953 through 1955 1st Series (Last of the "Advance Design") The code changed significantly in 1953. VINs now had: Series (single letter); Model Year (last two digits of the year); Factory Code (now changed to letters); and Production Order symbols. Each series was separately numbered in sequence for that particular plant (Starting at 001001). Example -- H54A001901 Series H Model Year 54 Factory Code A Production Order 0001901 The truck in the example is the 900th 1954 1/2-Ton truck built at Atlanta. '53-'64 Factory Codes A Atlanta, GA B Baltimore, MD F Flint, MI G Framingham, MA H Fremont, CA J Janesville, WI K Kansas City, MO L Los Angeles, CA N Norwood, OH O Oakland, CA P Pontiac, MI S St. Louis, MO T Tarrytown, NY V Southgate, CA W Willow Run, MI Y Wilmington, DE
I have two trucks and when you open the driver door it's right there on the front by the door hinges on a small aluminum plate and that number matches the number on the engine. FYI you can buy the plates at chevy duty or Jim Carter's trucks and put your name or your favorite color or your dog's name or your favorite numbers stamped on them. You can really get creative with them and maybe match the numbers to any collector car documentation you might have. Just for fun you know. Page 28 of www.classicparts.com 47-53 truck catalog. They call them door post ID's. http://www.classicparts.com/1947-49-Door-Post-ID-Plate-Chevrolet/productinfo/33-011/
not sure about '49, but on all my 55-59s i've had, the vin is stamped in the frame under the cab. you have to use a mirror to see it if the cab is mounted on the frame. Look about centered front to back between the cab mounts on the driver's side, topmost on the frame rail.
i think he is looking to buy a truck and the door plate is missing, and is trying to make sure it is not a scam.
Per say - the V.I.N. system was not in effect at that time, but there is a plate on the cowl with serial #'s that decode the yr.,place it was made, ect. I beleive it is a little to the right of center.
Does anyone know what I can do about a title in Va.? I may be getting a 49 for free, but if I cant title it, I don't know if its worth it? It does have the plate and I took a picture of it, but the vin is cut off. lol.
Dan O, contact your DMV for required documents. mention that the truck is from Georgia and that there is no title. also mention that you have a bill of sale from the previous owner, that lived in Georgia. OR buy a rustbucket of said year, 47-53 will work, that comes with the title.
1949 Chevy truck VIN plate is on the driver's jamb, down low just above the hinge. GM did not match numbers until 1955. I do OEM reproduction VIN plates with your VIN, domestic and foreign from 1900 to about 1977. Embossed/raised. 410 474 2244
