Boy, I must be an idiot! I tripped over Tommy's tech post a few days ago as I've never used a Uni-syn before and I've preparing to replace the stock intake on my flattie with a 2x2. It was running when I started; but that was almost 2 months ago. Then there's that ticking I need to fix, so I had to pull a head, too (long story). Now I've got a head sitting on the front seat, the original intake in the trunk, the new intake on the kitchen table...

...okay, I admit it, I'm enjoying myself! Thanks for reminding me, everyone!

A great read with brutal honesty - one of reasons why I love this site. I'm a hack too...

Oh ya I remember humility. It's good to see it again as it seems no one possesses such a quality anymore.

    Thank You.

Yeah I remember doing that. Done that several times w/ my truck. Get cocky and then do that, its like a slap to the back of the head to not forget your place. Thanks for making my day Ryan.

  7. 60? I'm doin that now at 42! What the hell do I have to look forward to?!?! Think I'll just go slash my wrists. Now where did I leave those razor blades, they were right here a ........

BTW Ryan, I did the same thing with the Lola T163 in my avatar. I'd been up 30 straight hours and we'd swapped engines overnight. Luckily it didn't fire and there was nothing in front of it...

Grampa used to say, when someone's confidence had overridden his competence: "The graveyard's full o'people that thought the gun wasn't loaded, or the trans was in neutral". Another one he used to say was: "It never pays to get in a hurry"
    Great story Ryan

Cool!! Now somebody should tell this to those bone heads who say, "if you didn't build it don't cruise it", in their profile statements or on their T-shirts. For the record, I didn't build it, but, my name on the title gives me the right to drive it ass wipe.

"Now, my confidence has grown since the early days with the shoebox. Through the years, I learned basic mechanic skills simply through trial and error and… tons of patience. I even built a car (with tons of help) by graduation. But I put the Tardel/Cochran coupe on a pedestal. It was built by my best friend and for all intents and purposes, it’s not my car. It’s our car. When I gap the plugs, I think about Keith – Would he set this gap? Maybe I should call. When I had distributor issues, it was the same… Paranoia. Self doubt. I began relying too much on others and not using my own brain and thought process. I simply loved the car too much to consider risking it with my own talent."

It is a difficult postion to be working on the car that you have put on a pedestal and not wanting to screw anything up. I have struggled with that for years while working on my late father and late grandfathers cars. Even though the titles have had my name for almost 20 years now, in my heart, the cars will always be theirs. I am just the curator. Like yourself, I have gained alot of knowledge in the last 20 or so years, but I still thank God every day for friends who have helped out over the years to keep them all going. The cars suck you into this hobby, but the people are what make you stay.

Great story! I get reminded every day how much of a hack I am, especially when trying to remove brake drums for a couple of hours before remembering the retaining screw from the axle.

I thought by the time I was this old I'd know what I was doing. Good to know I'm not alone.
