Right now I'm seven weeks out of rotator cuff surgery because I tore a tendon loose trying to drive out a pair of kingpins in a '40 Ford axle. First one came out fine, second one didn't.

A local garage owner told me last week he removes and replaces a pair of kingpins for $40.

    Just a thought.

Start soaking them with old oil or blaster weeks ahead of time, if your gonna use the hammer method.

A hydraulic press probably works the best, but it would involve the removal of the entire axle. In the shop where I work we have a small portable press that we use to replace the king pins on buses that is made by OTC. This is probably too large to use on a car axle though.

Start by getting those drums and backing plates off the spindle, make sure you take the little peg out of the axle... Soak with em some PB blaster and start tapping them out.

Frozen, drill hole down the bottom side of the pin, maybe 3/8s add some heat,, ping,, pop right out, the hole allows the wall of the king pin to fall in. maybe 10 minutes yer done.

put bottle jack under kingpin with a deep socket slightly smaller than kingpin between jack and pin, take a good strain on jack, lifting axle 1 inch off jackstand .place thick pipe [not too long] with hole bigger than pin on top of spindle, hit with big f'n hammer! pb blaster or soak with acitone/trany fulid before to make it easier to drive out.once you get it to move a little she should move easier as it goes
