Looks like i have my work cut out for me. In transport the deck lid decided to try and leave the car. In it's attempt it beat the rear pan up pretty good. I didn't realize it before I made the purchase but the driver side drip molding has been shaved. I gotta figure out the best way to replace that (yeah I'll be searching it up on the HAMB). Over all it is about what I expected for a 70 year old car. I am sure I will be running into other must fixes that I have no clue about yet.
looks good, hard to beat a 40 ford coupe! --- congrats on your purchase! looks like 39 drums & wheels or complete axles. you going to keep it a standard or is she going to be a DeLuxe?
It's a 40 body unless someone filled the wiper holes in the roof. It probably just has 39 drums. There are several articles around on the drip rail problem.
Yup, it just has '39 axles under it. Body is a Deluxe with Standard hood/grill. I think I am gonna keep the standard trim look. Now time to take it all apart and see what I really have.
How long will the honeymoon last before you get down to work? If it were me, I´d put a cot in the garage, stay put and just dream for a week ... at least.
The grille is a 39 deluxe, not that it really matters...but, if you decide to run a 40 grille, there will be no shortage of guys who would like to have the 39. Nice score. -Abone.
i didnt notice that it has a 39 grill. thats ok the hood & grill are good merchandise to sell. run down a deluxe grill & hood & you wont be sorry you did.
Already have the removable stuff off. Fenders, hood, Grill, deck lid. All need a little tweaking, some more than others. The deck lid is pretty straight, except for where someone cut something out of the latch area. Looks like a custom attempt at shaving the handles. Axles don't appear to be '39 either. the brakes are all cable actuated. Not like it matters I was going to put newer stuff in their place anyway. The tires are Ford script. I am guessing nowhere near OEM stuff, maybe Coker or the like. 16x4s 4 Ply. Once it rolls into the garage the dash will come out, and other things will begin. Gonna be slow progress though. The big part is just getting it.
Plans Like any set plans they are in a constant state of flux. Originally when I started "shopping" I wanted the MII IFS, LS engine, etc.... Now... I want a dropped axle in front, Still un-decided on the rear, but will probably be a 9". Engine will be the 8BA I have on the stand, (un***embled too) and 99% sure a t-5 trans. I'll cross the interior bridge when I get there, it's way too far off for anything definate on that side. I don't want a show queen, or "rat rod", just a nice driver with hints of multiple styles of customizing. I want to make it "mine".
Good choice on the I-beam and flatty... 40 coupes don't need much, sit it down a bit in front, paint it black and drive the **** out of it. Good luck, -Abone.
I used 1/4"cold rolled rod to make new drip rails on my `40 coupe.Pretty easy to do, and it looks better than just shaving and filling. Tom T
Looks like all the high dollar body stuff's missing. There are NO garnish moldings, obviously the running boards are gone. Since I tore it down and have had time to really look it over it looks like it was a true bucket of **** and "fixed" at least once. The p***enger side is the best looking, but most heavily repaired. The window section has been replaced. The 1/4 panels and lower sections of the doors have been "repaired" too. FUN TIMES!!!
The photos on the site listed below will help with the drip rail fabrication. http://www.srbymichael.com/construction/lonnie-keith/lonnie-keith.shtml
Westcott sells the drip rail, I bought some from them about !0 years ago, I did some trading with a friend who is a is an excellent metal worker and he put them in. they are sold in two pieces, above the door and over the quarter windows.
There are ways to correct the shaved gutter,,,this is how we did it on a friends 40 sedan,,, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146469&highlight=doors Also,,Gene's hot rod parts carries them,, http://www.geneshotrodparts.com/product/110 Good luck,,HRP
Hmmmm... I was reviewing some of the correspondence/e-mails. There are pictures of the garnish moldings and other trim pieces in the items to be sent to me. I sent a reminding e-mail about those parts. We'll see what happens there. Thanks for the links on the drip rail stuff. GOOD info. Looks like I have my 1st real item to get to. This after I get the OT 4X4 out of the other space in the garage. I have time though. I am in no big hurry.
Patience will be your friend. Often it's hard to take it slow when you first get a new project but it's always better to plan things out thoroughly first so you don't start going one way and then end up changing your mind. Those kind of impulsive decisions tend to get very expensive fast when you decide you don't like something you've done. Looks like a great project though. There isn't anything that can't be fixed with enough time and patience. You'll be happy with the end result. I'll bet 98% of the people reading this are wishing they were in your shoes. Have fun with it. Jay
