Im working on my father in laws 61 and its got a 223 in it... it hasnt been run in years so Im wondering what all I need to do to this little beast of a motor running. Ive gone down to the parts store and ordered: distributor... wires plugs... ive had some confusion over these the ones in the motor dont match what the stores recommend and coil and a throw out bearing for the 3speed ****** We rebuilt the carb about a year ago... so it should be good. it hasnt seen gas since. I dont know the firing order if you guys could help there I would appreciate it. and any tips and tricks to aid in the resurrection. Also, we are going to put a 3speed ****** from year un known but is likely from a late 50s truck... I have no idea how to put a manual transmission in. I helped my dad 12 years ago on my old s10 put in a five speed... but it was more me holding and him doing his thing. All the clutch ***embly appears to be there...hopefully it bolts right in. Ive got pictures of the transmission if it helps. Thanks,
Anything coulda been put in there for plugs over the years. SOunds like you've got the basics covered. Fuel pumps and filters are way cheap for those, if it hasnt run for that long. If for some reason that carb messes up on you and you want some more power out of it, throw a Clifford intake and header on it with a Holley 390 4 bbl or 350 2 bbl carb. It really wakes em up, they say 45-50% hp and torque gains.
Order on Dist: Bring up Cylinder #1 on TDC (Compression Stroke), note where the rotor is pointing as that is cylinder #1 on the distributor cap. Cylinder #2 is next on the cap, followed by #3, 4, 5, 6.. Best to rotate engine with a cheater bar and rotate engine in the correct direction.
My 56 223 has the firing order cast on the intake manifold. The order of the distriutor IS THE FIRING ORDER....For parts/plugs etc. just log onto rockauto.com. ....Maybe you should not attempt this
Well, Im capable of doing it.. however I find to get the best information.. act completely clueless and you get more than just the basic information. Like I said Ive never worked on a straight six... not that its a world of difference... I just dont know. and thats why Im seeking information from those that do. And usually Im not the only one that learns something... im just not affraid to ask.
thanks, hoping I can work on it tomorrow.. if not it will be next weekend. I believe my father in law might be going to meet his son somewhere to help him with a deer he shot today or something.. so we will see.
Yes that guy "NBR01F" is special, sorry bring up #1 TDC on compression stroke on the cap, thats cylinder 1... cylinders 5,3,6,2,4 thereafter... so much for my first post.
Post more often ... If you hang around long enough, you will learn to hit the wrong keys, ignore sentence structure, misspell and not even care.. or too lazy to correct it.. ...but we want car talk and lots of pics
Ok, I guess I should of taken pics.. didnt think about it.... I got the plugs in.. gaped. wires on.. We are going to give the distributor a try.... it looks pretty clean and no wobble.. all looks to be ok. so... I dont have a wiring diagram for the 61 f100s so Im winging it to some degree... the condenser is in the dizzy... with a black wire going out... that goes to the neg. lead on the coil... the coils positive lead goes to 12v switched... and I believe a node on the starter solenoid..(both of these are hiding somewhere.. havent found them yet) Im ***uming there is no external condenser... I find no parts for one.. so I go to check the TDC ... and I bring it up to the mark and TDC line... pull the cap... its pointing to 6 ... ok.. well I know 1 and 6 both reach TDC at the same time ( so im told ) and were referred to as "buddy pistons" My dad tryed explaining to me over the phone how its all supposed to work, but Im more of a visual person. My first instinct was to pull the distributor and put it right.. my dad told me to put the whistler into number 1 and see where it was and how it was timed before I did anything.. so im going to do that wed. afternoon. anyway.. just seeking some more advice.. thanks!
I am running a truck 3spd trannsmission in my old 58 Fairlane and it has a course spline(10splines) input shaft where the p***enger car has a fine spline(23). My pressure plate and flywheel is for a 9.5" diameter clutch disc. Now Advanced Auto will tell you they dont have a disc for your application as its not in their computer. Have them drag the old parts book out and you will find that a 1981 Ford fairmont clutch disc will work just great as I put it to the test at the Pileup this weekend and it worked great.
thats interesting... I dont know the shape of the clutch ***embly... it appears ok.. The engine apparently is a remanufactured engine... alot of the parts appear newer than I would expect an original motor to look... and the block has been painted twice. there is a red shiny paint and a dull ford blue on top. Once it is running we are going to pull the motor and ****** and go over everything and clean it up and paint it ... put it back in. I had noticed that it was hard to find clutch parts for it... I was thrown off a bit when looking into the ***embly there were 3 maybe 4 metal rods there... just past the clutch fork. this is Im guessing part of the pressure plate? will the fairmount pressure plate work as well?
might want to make sure the valves move free by hand before starting it they seem to bend push-rods easy prime the oil pump to fill the rocker shaft also napa web site lists quite a few parts ebay has gaskets and also a 3 carb intake right now
