I've got a late 70's Carter YF carb on my 64 Econoline (170). I've had problems with the carb flooding out and leaking after shutdown. At first I thought it was a gas boiling problem, but it would do it after 30 seconds of running...so it wasn't even getting hot.

I took the carb off and took it apart to see if the float was sticking. When I looked in the bowl, there were rusty chunks and other crap in the bowl. I'm guessing that I need to add another fuel filter and have my gas tank cleaned and sealed.

My question is, could this be causing the flooding? The carb was rebuilt a few years ago by someone else and I really don't want to rebuild it again. Should I just clean it really well and see what happens? Everything on the carb looks great except for the bowl. I also shook the brass float to see if there was any gas in it...I didn't hear anything. I'll probably just clean it really well and reinstall it and see what happens. I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or if I am missing something.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

after your carb boiling gas thread, i checked mine out i have a holley and it does the same thing, gas will dribble into the intake when shut off making it hard to start. i just rebuilt mine so im thinkin i may have set the float to high. but i asked my old man and he said the vent for the gas tank may be pluged. my van is hard to fill up with gas and it takes forever and if u go fast it will spit back all over your shoes

With old tank it could be rust/dirt. Simple help is filter before fuel pump and maybe another before carb. Clear universal palstic filter works for me. [IMG]

I'm going to try the two filters...thanks Powerband. I'll put them on this weekend and post the results. If it works, then I'll take the gas tank off and seal it. I'll also check the vent in the gas tank...thanks econovanman.

I just tried the same fpr as powerband, and well the float stuck and flooded out the van at the stop light and it still leaked gas into the carb when shut off.
I asked a couple guys and they told me it could be a bad needle and seat or in need of a vented gas cap

    **UPDATE**

I took off the gas tank and found a broken gas cap inside the tank and a giant mouse nest on top of the tank covering the vent! It looks like the mouse even chewed through the vent hose. I know that the mouse nest is at least 20 years old because it was mostly made of SHAG CARPET!

The tank was pretty clean, so I cleaned it out and put it back on. I also replaced all of the rubber hoses including the vent hose and filler hose. I also put in a new steel fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb. I also installed an inline filter before the fuel pump. I cleaned the carb, changed the oil and installed new plugs and put everything back together. I put some fresh gas and MMO in the tank and fired her up.

She fired right up and i let it idle for about 20 minutes. Then I took it down the road and let the engine get nice and warm. She ran better than ever!

NO CARB BOILING...NO GAS LEAKS...NOTHING!! The van used to spit and sputter when I would come to a stop...not anymore...she idled SMOOTH.

I am soooo excited. I can actually drive my van! Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll try to post some pics of the mouse nest and broken gas cap.

I also started it right after I shut it down to see if the engine was getting flooded after shutdown...NOTHING! She fired right back up.
