Got a 49 F-1 with a 226 flathead six in it. I know nothing about these. Anyone know of any books I can pick up that would point me in the right direction as far as rebuilding this? What should an average cost of a rebuild on one of these be. I pulled the head off last night and it looks pretty good in there. It seems speed parts for these are no where to be found and the ones out there are sky high. I would really like to keep this motor and run it.

  2. Get on a used book site,,Amazon, Alibris, other?,,,get a MOTOR truck manual that covers your year of truck........or possibly a factory manual?

You can get parts from Macs or Kanter, from what I remember ball park you're looking at around $1200 just in parts for a total overhaul. I've seen rebuilt motors sell for $1800-$2500 to give you an idea. Speed parts are nearly impossible to find unless you've got deep pockets.

I have a truck manual for my truck and it has a ton of motor info in it. Was just looking for something else, i know there are some neat tricks for switching distributors and making them electronic. Was looking for stuff like that. If anyone know a Flathead guru in the Ft Worth TX area let me know.
