Great job, guys! You're writing the book on how to approach the record book.
We were next to you in the lanes on the Special Course at Speed Week. We were both too busy to chat. Anyway, I wear my Old Crow shirt with pride. Way to go!!!

You and Bobby are great guys! Hope to hang with you guys again at El Mirage! That was a great weekend...
    Congrats on the records!
Question...You guys keep upgrading the motors, but do you ever try different gears ratios? Or is that something that doesn't come into play?

Do the cl*** rules dictate vintage OHV conversions only,
or are you allowed to adapt late model heads as well ?

    I wonder if that 153 mph p*** was a "sketchy *** ride"?

nice job bobby. unfortunately our flat head finally died for good. part of the deck pulled away from the block. :( so no october meet for us. btw is that a 3 or 5 main motor?

no restriction on head design. pete ardema holds a few records with a head that's two aluminum subaru heads welded together.

    Hey everybody,

Thanks for all the support, it's really helped push us to keep racing and to keep going faster.
This year really kicked our ****, but it was worth every drip of blood and sweat. I know a lot of people have wanted to see pictures of the motor, so here ya go...

As you know, we try to use as much vintage technology as possible, and I think we really pushed the limit this time. We stayed with Stromberg carbs, thanks to Clive from England donating the three brand new 97's to us at Speed Week, and we ****ed the air and fuel through a Paxton/Mcullough supercharger, into a Gemsa single cam head to a stock 3 main block, and out some straight pipe headers.
We definitely encountered our share of problems this year. We first had problems with our 7mm magneto wires arching on anything metal and causing miss fires. Thanks to Roy Creel the SCTA president, and the fastest Banger guy around, for coming through with some 8mm solid core wires that saved the day for us. The second problem we encounters was a blown intake gasket. We ran the first 4 runs on it without noticing. After fixing it, we picked up 20 MPH. But the biggest set back of the week was blower belt slippage. We had 6 rib serpentine pulleys, but the only belt length that fit our arrangement only came in a 4 rib width. We thought it would be enough, but it wasn't. Lot's of slippage and lost boost.
Every year we run, we encounter completely new problems, and learn so much. I doubt that will ever end, but hopefully one day the ratio to lessons learned will outweigh the possible problems.

Many people came through these last two months to make this all happen, so here is a list of participants : Max and Max at H and H flatheads, Lucky Burton, Joe T Creep, Don Zig and Joe, Jack, Scott, Jay, lakeheaders.com, Lantz Soliday, Clive at Stromberg, the entire volunteer staff of the SCTA and the ghost of Joe Gemsa.

To answer a few questions from above....

Eyeball "Did the line speed up at the end of the week?" Yes, Saturday, we only waited 3.5 hours to run, and Sunday there was no wait at all. There was only one course this year due to moisture, but it was still better than getting rained out and canceling the entire event.

JangleGuy "We were next to you in the lanes on the Special Course at Speed Week. We were both too busy to chat." That's always how it works,. never enough time to socialize with the people we want to the most.

Bad Bob "You guys keep upgrading the motors, but do you ever try different gears ratios? Or is that something that doesn't come into play?" No, gear ratios are one of the biggest factors in this sport. We have spent the last two years finding the sweet spot, but we still jump up and down a couple ratios to see what the engine will pull. One jump in gears, can make a big difference.

Unkl Ian "Do the cl*** rules dictate vintage OHV conversions only,
or are you allowed to adapt late model heads as well ?" Well,. It says that it is restricted to vintage technology, but that is kinda vague. There is someone running a banger with a Mitsubishi, or toyota head, but it's not going any faster than a vintage overhead.

exactly. we've got one more cherry block that's going together soon and hopefully if we've learned anything over the past 12 years of doing this we'll have something that goes like stink and stays in one piece.

man, that combo you've got has so much potential. you might be needing a chute soon. ;)

    great effort and results guys!

I have a couple comments on your responses. did rod and custom get it wrong then that this is a 5 main block or are you running only 3 main caps on it??

also, how can you really say that the mitsu or toy head is that much different than a ohv conversion head that was designed in 1983?? although gemsa made heads since the 50's that particular one is 25 years old with a fair share of whittled aluminum to replace originally cast parts.

this is not the rod and custom motor. If you notice, that one was all polished and shiny. This one is not. And Joe gemsas patterns for this head were originally patterns for the Morales head which goes back to the 40's or 50's. So although cast in the 80's the patterns are old. And American made.
