I had the same thing happen to me in my 53 about 12 years ago. I went with my dad to a show about 15 miles away and when coming home, it started knocking and got worse and worse until I got home. It was a babbit motor and it blew the babbit out on one of the rods and it literally blew up the whole motor. 53 stick cars were still babbit bearing motors. I found a running 235 from a 54 truck with insert bearings and full pressure oiling and it ran fine for years until I sold it recently. Sounded great with headers too. Walk on by any babbit bearing motors, the restorers can have those. Keep the six!

Patrick's catalog comes with all info you need to know concerning the 216 to 235 swap. And as you found, they're good on the phone too. It's an easy and inexpensive swap, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the increase in torque and h.p. The 235 has bigger valves, etc. '54 and later is the ticket. I see you have help now from a couple of these good guys...you're in! Good luck, have fun.

  5. just let me know. I may be interested in that powerglide if you get that motor.

I wuz gonna encourage you to keep the 6 too. But looks like it's a done deal. I got a 58 235 in my 54. got everything inside from Patrick's many years ago. Good people. Take their advice.
There's no balance problem with a six. Mine sometimes sees 6000, but it stops pulling at 5000. highway cruising is 2500 to 3000.

It's not a race motor. But the right parts make it fun to drive and it's making 25 MPG now on road trips.

I am a fan of sbc's and bbc's. In your case you should stick with the six banger. It will save you time and money, its much easier removing and installing an engine rather than a whold drive train. I'll keep my eyes and ears open. I happen to know someone doing a V8 swap on a 54 Chevy Ill let ya know when hes ganna do it and what he'sl doing with the inline. Good luck.

I have a v-8 in my '54 Chevy sedan and a 6 in my wagon. Love 'em both. Stay with the 6 it's easier in the long and short run and you already are going in that direction. Just make sure you get a full pressure one. The babbit beaters are neat right up to the point your is. As a side note you can build one bad*** 6 to compete with alot of the 8 crowd. Plus the sound is like no other.

  10. I have a 468 Big Block Olds short block and a turbo 400 for $1,400 probably cost an extra couple hundred to finish it up with an intake and heads for some serious cruisin fun!

Before you put the 235 in, you might want to consider converting it to a full filter system while it's out, that stock filter doesn't do much. It's pretty easy to do while the motors out (I did mine while it was in the frame, fenders removed) and should add to the life of the motor.

    Good luck.

5 to 6 thousand RPM out of an old I-6 are you serious??? The 216 sounded like it was gonna blow up at 3200, does this sound right to anybody else???? Not calling anybody a liar, I am new to the straight 6 life and after babying the 216 and still kiling it, this sounds foreign to me.
And Timmy if you help out with the swap I can provide food, beverages and the trans, I could use the help and have no need for a PG trans.

    THANKS AGAIN GUYS YOU ROCK!

You can only get them up to a certain rpm before they aren`t making any more power,so it would be useless to try and do so.

That whole car seems to be Mickey Moused together, half the problem is undoing the previous mistakes & shortcuts. But I am looking at a different motor that I will go through and R&R anything that needs it and then I should be fine. But how far can somebody push a slightly built 235 without damage??? Not trying to torture the new motor, but I do need to know it's limitations.....
