A friend walked up to Wally Parks and his wife with a drag racing book that he's been collecting names for quite awhile. Wally seeing him come up with a pen out automatically started reaching for it, and my friend kind of pulled it back and said "Wally, I already have your signature, but I'd like to get your wifes." I think it made her day, as they couldn't stop laughing. Same thing with Garlits wife. I think he has more wifes signatures (who really made their drag racing career possible), than anyone I know.

  3. the world needs all of them, the good and the bad, all make it go round, and each inspire the other. even a hack comes up with something a artist might not had seen, or thought. cars would be really boring if they were all perfect.

Maybe the "Hollywood Gorge" is what you know... but do you know what he did at Compton and Lynwood shops in his early years?...he didn't build traditional Hot Rod's cause they weren't traditional yet...George and Sam built allot of cars together..but later George found his strength in marketing before there was even the word marketing,,,

What about all the cars that the other guys built.. Sam built allot and yes he was a master
but a bunch of the stuff that came out of the shop was not built by Sam..

I've been working allot with George and people who don't understand the history
will soon have a whole new outlook on George.. Hot Rod Jesus? No but who is?

  5. Its a good thing that video didnt show what George did with the Chrisman coupe after he got his hands on it.

i've gotten alot of autographs from barris and other greats and was never charged. in fact they seem happier then hell that some one would want them.
but i agree that asking for money from your fans is not cool not even for charity. just singe and ask for a donation if possible. cause with out fans you aint nothing but a regular ol joe like the rest of us. i do remember a friend of mine ask big daddy roth if he could just draw the rat fink on a helmet him and his son that they painted. back the 95 watson show in Norco Roth told him for a $150 he would do it. he told him i love you big daddy, but i don't love you that much.

  8. ive gotten some autographs from alot of "famous" people mostly 60's drag racers
grumpy, sox, dyno , maverick, riggle ,garlits aderman, geofferion(sp?) and i have candy clark, bo hopkins, paul lemat ,dennis gage, i think i have buffalo bobs and a few others

the people ive met that i either didnt get one from or just was amazed that they would actually talk to me were linda vaughn, gene winfield, bill hines
i saw the guy co-host from overhualin just took his pic from afar (now if courtney hansen was there it woulda been awhole different story hubbada hubbada)

out of all of these people the only one that seemed like they wanted to be somwhere else was garlits ive seeen him probbably 4 times in person

i did buy pics from the actors of american graffitti (got an awesome poster of the 32 and milner on paradise road which mr lemat glady signed) he was a VERY nice and cordual guy it was obvious he has led a very rough life seemed very frail

but if i did walk up to someone famous with my own pic or piece of paper and they asked for money just to sign ...nope nadda gonna happen dont care who they are or why

i dont have a desire to meet mr barris and after reading this i have even less of a desire

  9. I guess that insults every other Barris in the country .

  10. What? Is the bi-monthly Barris bashing now monthly? Why didn't anyone tell me this?

I heard from a friend of a friend that Barris once microwaved a kitten........before microwaves were invented! Or was that Barry Hess he was talking about....?

    Jeez, has it reached Barris bashing time of the month already? What Evel says pretty much sums it up for me, but for those who are actually interested in historical fact rather than opinion with 50 odd years hindsight and would like to know just who taught who what PLEASE check this thread out;

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=385721&highlight=1953+article

Read the article ALL THE WAY THROUGH, then re-ask the question how influential George Barris was.

For fricks sake, he's a human being that will have good days and bad days just like the rest of us. And as far as 10 bucks for an autograph goes, if that's what he wants, I think he's justified to ask for it. It's your choice wether or not you pay it. It's not like it's unusual or anything, very many celebrities charge for signatures. Does it make him a bad person? Who gives a ****, he's George Barris and the Kustom world owes him big time. I hate this George versus Sam ****.
    Paul.

Barris is one of the founding fathers of this thing we all enjoy called hot rodding. I think he has earned the right to do whatever he wants to. Get over it and just pay the $10. When you have accomplished as much as he has in life you can charge the next guy $10 and get your money back tight***.

I was at the Hall of Fame Luncheon during the GNRS in 2007, when they inducted Barris. He signed a book of mine for free. So did Wally Parks and Pete Chapouris.

I don't know if it has been clarified yet but Shelby gives all of the money he makes from autographs to the Carroll Shelby Childrens Foundation he runs. As for Barris, I've heard that for years about him. I've had some ****y young punk baseball players try to pull that **** on me but you'd think an old guy would be over himself by now.

anyone who thinks their better than the next guy and can charge to write his name on something and get paid for it is a douchebag..i dont care if they invented the leg your standing on..these kinds of people have no humiliation, what makes them any better than anyone on here?.. nothin'

the only reason these people exist is because of us..or their followers..Ive heard it out of some of these celebrities.."i wouldnt be who I am without my fans"..those people get it.
the power hungry big head MFers..can KMA..they aint no better than me or you.

no wonder we have celebrities killing people and getting away with it, crashing cars and shooting up places, and otherwise lawless acts without re-percussions..the idolizing in this world is outa hand..kids seeing rap stars become their idols, and the way they represent themselfs, and thats who they want to be when they grow up?..and many other celebrities..sickining..
No man is better than another, no matter what they have or who they are. and no, his name scrawled on anything is not worth more than your name

Someone PLEASE close this thread. It is an embarr***ment to the HAMB and to the hobby in general. Everyone is en***led to their opinion of a person but the amount of bashing by people that have never even met him has reached a peak this time around.

Obviously from what we all know about George there was something else at play that day. There HAD to be a reason he was charging. The George I know will sign anything that holds still for longer than 3 seconds! And not only that he'll talk to you for however long you want about whatever you want. I've talked with many times at various shows, concours, auctions, and automotive functions and he has been nothing but cordial to not only me but anyone who approaches him.

I'd really like to see more pics from Gene and Larry's show this past weekend that George happened to be at. 234 posts complaining about what he did there and less than 50 on the thread announcing the show and pics from the show :(

Me & my striping buds were there & I don't know that George gave any of the autograph money to the "Foose" charity. But, I could be wrong, maybe he did. In the years I've known him he would sign anything & take pics with anyone. So what if he charges,"******" ain't cheap ya know.
Besides, if he wasn't there it wouldn't be the same.
For the guy that started this stupid, waste of time thread, I hope that you took that $10. & gave it to the "Fooses" for their charity, otherwise get a life.
Anyway, as soon as my pics are downloaded I'll post them.
I don't care what you say about any of these guys, to me their all great!
    PS.Ya got $10. I can borrow?

    well said .....

I have met barris a hand full of times and he has always been top notch ...

there was another post on here about the late Boyd Coddington tooo bashing him ... it turned my stomach because I met him twice . the first time I was at a show in del mar checking out a street rod . he walked right up to me and asked my opinion of the car and really listened . the car wasn't my cup of tea , but had a few really nice mods on it ... He was a great guy every time we spoke ...

oh and close the post like before mentioned.

"cake of disgust got it's icing"...Genius.

  30. I would've laughed in his face, and asked, who do you think you are? Sam Barris, the real talent for that last name. Besides, I never got the concept of collecting autographs at all. Let alone waiting hours for one. He once sat at a table I was at recently, and I didn't like the guy at all. I almost asked him to leave
