Pictures Of Gauges on the fire wall

I remember seeing some early customs , hot rods with the gauges in the firewall. I ***ume they were functional , I don’t remember seeing a tachometer in any of the photos, it seems to me that would be the most functional to have under the hood.
Any pictures out there? Anybody else beside me considering this?

 

A thought came to my mind very quick about your question. I'm not gonna call myself the expert on customs or even trad rods, but if it's a show thing, I really feel like a custom being showed would have the hood closed to show the flow of body lines. Especially if headlight treatments, hood modifications , or lid modifications have been done.
So with that being said, I kinda think gauges under the hood of --lets say a 50 Merc custom wouldn't ever be seen unless the hood is up, also like suicide doors on the same car, don't see if if it isnit open.
Not trying to say you're on the wrong track. Just some thoughts.

 

My friends dad has a 58 edsel and has gauges in the engine compartment,if i recall he has a oil,water temp and voltmeter,mabye a tach,sorry i dont have any pics its been awhile since ive seen the car.hes the only guy ive ever seen with them under the hood,,think he has them bolted to the fender well not the firewall though.hes had this car since the 80's so mabye its a 80's thing? i always liked the idea and when i get to putting a motor in my wagon i think i may just put some gauges under the hood also.

 

It depends on whats under the hood I guess, I f the ejngine compatment shows a different aspect of the car.

Firewall gauges are mainly a hot rod thing. They are there so you can monitor the engine's vital signs while you tune it without having to go around and look inside the car ... and probably getting grease on the upholstery.

 

I have a oil pressure and amp gauge on my fire wall. I had a flat head in it from 67 to 84 with a canister oil filter so after a oil change oil pressure is a big thing. And working on voltage regulator and polarizing the generator I liked having that on the fire wall. And it makes people ask why and I tell them because I wonted to.

 

I agree... but that doesn't mean you couldn't have gauges under the hood... it just means they wouldn't get seen.

I have been contemplating this as well. Could two tachs be run off of the same box or would you need a separate transmitter for each one?

 

We have ran underhood guages on race cars with multiple tachs on the same box. I have never thought about it for a street car though. It's a cool look.

I do not have pics, but I say DO IT, it is so kool old school.. and if you are working on your engine, you can see your oil, temp, revs, etc... GOOD IDEA..

 

but does the trendero count???? engine was non-running

Here's a 50 Ford g***er with some on the firewall

 

....put some gauges [oil press/temp/tach] up on my firewall temporary-like while fittin'/tweekin'/firin' the engine up...like the idea a ****load. will run a secondary set fully mounted once I clean up the firewall a bit.......REALLY like the lighted ones in LIVE WIRE's car - pinstripe accent sound cool as hell too!!

I'm doing this on my 31 and like the idea a lot. There are dual-gauge senders available for the marine market that can drive two gauges off one sender, as it's common to have more than one ****pit with a second set of gauges on larger boats.

 

... and Craig's keeping the firewall just as it is when it goes back on the street , cool old stickers & all .
