I believe they were from JC Whitney(or someone like that) and that they were to give your low dollar Chevy a little Caddilac-ish elegance.

I have seen several styles of these, both plated and painted.
A 49-52 Chevy sedan sat on the east side of Houston in front of a house for years not being run but not for sale either and had a pair of larger painted fins with working lights in them so they could be used as primary lighting or in conjunction with the factory lights below.
Fun and unusual accessory worth using and enjoying.

Sometimes those add on bits can look funky, but those look really cool. Score!

I had a pair like that in the box for a 49-51 Ford. can't remember the name of the company that made them now.

I've never seen that style for chevys but I've seen quite a few sets with the tail lights in them on ebay. someone posted an old field car (49-50 chevy) here with a set.

I think they are cool, though i would be more likely to put them on my cool stuff shelf than on a car.

I bought a set last year. the set I bought was still in the box. I thought they were
fo the 49-50 Fords. I'll check when I get home.

    Happy Trails,

ebay. if you look a couple times a week they will show up within a month or 2. they always seem to sell for more than I'm willing to pay.

ok everyone, read the original post. i know they will fit the fleetline whether they were designed to or not. a sixer of beer and a grinder, they'll fit anything. i was just wondering if anyone knew any HISTORY on them like who made them. were they a factory add on? when did they originate? im happy with the purchace, by the way i paid 58.00 bucks for em. like i said, i just wanna know more about em. if anyone has pics of other cars with em lets see em. thanks...

like they said, they're a cheesy crappy add on from JC Whitney or similar from the 50s. This is from a 1955 JCW ad.

History would be that people are suckers will buy anything.

heh....there's a bit of a difference between buying JCW crap when it's new, and when it's over 50 years old. I'll cut you some slack...but you do seem to understand how it is to buy new JCW stuff now. It was the same back then.

I'm going to guess they were made by "Gem Manufacturing" back in the day. I have a 49-52 Chevy "bullnose" from them in the box, and as I recall the fins were the same company.

I think they are still in business. try google and see what you come up with.

well i got them in, and as you can see they suck! imo. maybe they would look better on a styline.? anyway if someone wants them hit me up. if not they will end up on a shelf for another 50 years. fins.jpg

    ROFL!

That looks like shit bro. I'm glad you realized that and didn't try to justify your purchase.

Find some old equipment in your garage to mount 'em on.

They would probably look better if the stock taillights were removed... but you're right, as is, bleh.
