Slightly OT, but cool nonetheless. Had to share on my favorite board The Spectre Speedliner (which is a rebuild of a fairly old streamliner, with a CadCo twin-turbo Caddy engine, of course), just ran 287 on it's first shakedown pass on the salt, driven by Kenny Hoover. The class record they are chasing is about 100 MPH above that, and they plan to break it by a wide margin next August. We'll see how close they get on the shakedown runs this week. I know the tuning isn't ready for a 400 MPH run, and i think they'd be nuts to go that fast the second day the car was completely together, but it could theoretically run over 300 by tomorrow. I do believe 287 mph makes it the worlds fastest Cadillac Or at least really, really close. Of course, I got stuck sitting in Albuquerque, but hopefully I can get away next August to join in the fun. The Spectre guys are running a blog on their website, with pictures and video. There is some pretty cool stuff in there, like a short peice on Johnny Green's 'Old Crow' Lakester, and some pretty good pics of some other traditional stuff. Of course, Amir being the ace promoter he is, everything is well branded, but if you look past the fluff, there is some really cool stuff in there. http://spectreperformance.com/blog/ The dance of pushing to get things done for an event like this was a totally new experience for me. I have more respect than ever for you guys who get stuff put together for something like this, especially the guys building a car in their garage at home. Hats off to you. Just for fun, here's a comparison of the art and the real car. There's probably a difference of over 1000 hours of blood sweat and tears between those 2 pictures, and I'm proud to say a small portion of them are mine
Cool, I think my cousin worked on the motor for that car!? He was telling me about a cadillac powered lakester that he was working on that could theoretically run close to 400mph. This was about 6 or 7 months ago when I went to visit Abq.
Been having connection problems, so couldn't post right away, but we set the record for fastest gasoline powered car in the world at 330.7 MPH with an exit speed of 340 yesterday. I'm stoked. I think somone went faster later in the day (380), but not sure if they were in the gasoline or fuel class. Still planning to go after the 400 MPH club in August, as far as I know Who's your cousin, Ollin? I haven't heard anything about the twin engine car actually making a run yet, but it should be pretty extreme when it does. I'm no directly involved in that one, so I don't have the latest - anyone know the story? We built a 331 / 365 / 390 mutt for a 34 coupe running in the 55-older gasoline class (naturally aspirated) that dyno'd around 500 HP with 4 deuces, but I don't think he got it together enough to run this year.
Hey Chris! Long time I'd be really interested in knowing a little about this beast of a Cad motor. Spacifically the cam profile, what was done to the bottom end [or wasn't done ] to handle the high RPM's, and what exactly is the RPM opperating range? BTW, heard from Larry lately?
Paul (Butch) Lateer went 284.908 in '01 I know. His looks very much like yours but has two 500 inch Cads and he made a single exhaust manifold for each side and as best as I remember a single long valve cover to make it look like a V16. Paul is in San Jose. I don't know if the 284 is his best or not.
It's a 500 stroked to 528 CID. Stock crank (stroked), ported stock heads, hand built main cap stabilizers (and a few other block mods), one-off cam, Hogan intake manifold, custom headers, etc. They were running 11 PSI of boost from twin 88 mm turbos, and they were running a 1.9:1 effective final drive gear ratio. We will be back in August to see what she'll so flat out.
"Chester" Dominguez He races a blown Vega, and an insane drag bike...and I think hes still a tech inspector at the Abq. National Speedway.
If you have to ask, I have to make a shameless plug That record had stood for over 20 years. People have chased it with big blocks - even 600+ CID all-aftermarket BB engines - hemis and wedges, Ford, GM, and Mopar (pretty much everything but a Cadillac), and not been able to hit it. In the era when all fo the big blocks were first developed, Cadillac was the standard of the world. Apparently, the BB Cadillac is still the standard of the world when it comes to big blocks. According to Amir Rosenbaum (the guy who owns Spectre and the car), this is probably the first car to set a record over 300 MPH on it's first outing. If Kenny hadn't been blinded by the cabin fire-suppresion system half way through the first run, we may have made the record with the car's very first run. I think that says something about the whole car and crew, not just the Caddy engine and us. Chester is a pretty cool guy. Lots of old-school skill His pro-stock bike was supposedly the first in the division (before there was a class for it), and ran faster back in the day than most of the current guys can run at this altitude. He is one of he most hard-core drag guys I know.
Wow! this is great to read. I would like to see more info on this and the twin engined liner. I am very impressed to see the car has made it to the salt and ran. This is a very big acomplishment when running a liner. The Nish team here in Salt Lake has proven this over the years. I am glad to see so many putting in the time and efort to put more high speed liners on the salt. Wuld like to have made it to the World Finals But had lots of work to get done and no money so we will all make some day. I did how ever make it to speed week and the world of speed, and had a great time!
Great to see Caddy mills getting the job done. Does anyone know of any flathead performance up grades for a caddy 346 tank motor. Or any pics of anything done?
Guys a Ruler! he's right behind me. I remember about 10 years ago when he was 1st installing the motors and building the drives and headers. Bonneville Butch we call him,
I haven't done anything but stock rebuilds on the flattys. There is a guy on the HAMB that was repopping the aluminum heads for them.
Any idea who it was repopping the heads. Last time I heard there was a shop in long Beach (Cooks I think)but they were way out of my price range. Wondering maybe a cam and milling the heads for now. Was going to put a 4-71 on it but not too sure anymore.
CadDaddy has some of his fact crossed. First the Specter car is not the fastest gas powered car that record belongs to the Spirit of Rett a AAGS(AA Gas Streamliner) at around 390it runs a 500 + inch Reher and Morrison BBC with carburators. The record that the Specter car set was the AABGS (AA Blown Gas Streamliner) and at the time they set it there was not an existing record. The AA class is for engines over 500 cu. inch. The Specter car is impressive to run the 340 speed with what I have heard estimated to be around 900 hps and if the engine is really good for 2400 hp the potential to go 400 is there. They did a great job for a first time try and having Kenny Hoover in the seat didn't hurt either as he drove the car previously to many runs over 300 mph. Rex
Rex. Go back and reread the first post. he said it was the fastest "Cad Powered" 'liner. And points out that they are 100mph below the class record. He is not making any untrue claims but the reader will need to read.
Research fail. I took someone else's word for it and didn't look it up myself. Bad Chris. We'll just have to wait until August to see if she's got any more in her.
