f-ing amazing- someone give these guys an old 392 Hemi and have them make a few thousand blocks and heads for us http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsmiIeAkE-o
pretty cool stuff. A friend of mine writes the programming for stuff like this and teaches people how to use these machines. He has a couple of minature small blocks that he made using this technology.
Saw this Vid a few weeks back, totally amazing! I think I could make an exception to the No Billet rule in this circumstance!
One of my old bosses built a BBC with hemi heads using one of their blocks. They're big $$ and they don't have water jackets, so they could never be used on the street.
Totally amazing ! What would we do without a computer and a bit ! If someone told me 20 years ago engine blocks and parts would be made this way I would have laughed till I cried ! Incredible ! I guess those blocks are for the big time drag racer with the big corporate sponsors paying for them ! Must be nice ! RetroJim
That is absolutely amazing. Any engine that *needs* that kind of strength wouldn't do well on the street anyhow. Street cars could make due with just a regular aluminum block. I'm sure some of you guys see this stuff everyday, but to me it's magic. Un real.
that was so cool.it just blows my mind how people can come up with programs to do stuff like that.hell i cant even draw a stick figure!!!
No human could ever write a five axis profiling program like that. There are just too many vectors in play at once. Simple programs that don't move all five axes at once can be done by hand, but not that draped contour 3D stuff. I have a CNC machine, and I can tell you that the commands to move even a three axis machine are too complex to program parts with 3D contours like that by hand. It truly is a nearly unlimited technology though. You're only limited by your own ingenuity and the work envelope of the machine.
That's very impressive. There's another video that comes up in the list for a W16 block - again incredibly impressive, but this is no demo piece - it's a Bugatti Veyron engine. There's a video of the W16 being assembled too. Fantastic stuff. First I've ever heard or seen of a W16. Mart.
A friend of mine here in Indy is "hand whittling" a new NOVI V8 racing engine using "old school" mills and lathes just like Fred Offenhauser did it. Have a look: indyroadsters.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=44098829
I got kinda hot with the beat bumping and that drill penatrating deep into the cylinder as the block was writhing around and the water........ UH ya that was cool!
I read an article in street rodder one time where an old machinist custom built his own engine. It was kinda like a sbc with 4 valves per cylinder, and I think it had dual cams but I can't remember. Cool stuff making your own block!
