He's an idiot. I won't elaborate on just how many stupid/arrogant/selfish/lame brained people there are here in my U.S.A., I'll just offer a bit of optimism. There are enough friendly/polite people to offset the shit-heads.

Yes, there are pricks that (imagine, in their wildest dreams) that think as an American they have some special status in humanity. Of course they are arrogant/selfish/stupid/lame brains, limiting themselves and theirs to their on small world.

You should have told him to go fuck hisself though.

    Keep on keepin' on.

  3. You guys will probably flame me. I have traveled outside the US more than most Americans and enjoyed meeting everyone everywhere. However, I have to admit I cringe when I see a great car sold and shipped outside the US. The reason for this is I consider these cars American treasures and its a bit like looting famous paintings or other treasures from another country. When a classic car leaves the US you can pretty much guarantee your grandchildren will never get a chance to see that car again. Unfortunately these cars and trucks get rarer in the US every year.

That said I completely understand the points of view of those who will and will not sell outside the US.

I just sent a new wiring harness for a 37 Chevy big truck to Norway and the only thing extra I had to do was fill out a form with mine and the buyers address and what was being shipped and a value,I tried selling it at some local swapmeets but no one would buy it.

I wouldn't trust an Aussy as far as I could throw one. They all have beady little eyes and crooked noses with a knife behind there backs.
Ons bought some Eelco parts from one, he got them from the US at a killer deal AND PASSED IT ON TO ME!
    Never trusted one, never will.
Now a die hard 1939 Nazi on the other hand.......
(My apologies to modern Germans, joke guys)

I've purchased a whole bunch of things from a fellow in Germany.. made a good friend.. we share the same birthday so we keep in touch. These were American treasures that made their way back over the pond. In this case I was the foreigner being shipped to. Thank goodness he didn't have the same viewpoint shared by some.

Also bought a '41 military Indian that was residing in NZ since WWII. It made it back to the states thanks to the Kiwi that was kind enough to sell to a foreigner.

As pointed out, it's a simple matter to mail an item to almost anywhere in the free world. Customs form must be filled out at the post office and of course it costs more to mail something across the water. Anybody need something mailed, pm me. Within reason, I'll lend a hand.

At least by sending the parts to a fellow HAMBer saves us from buying them back at walmart as a cheap TV or patio set. I swear the only American made stuff in walmart is fishin' worms....

I have sold many items to people overseas.
Sold a lot of vintage model kits to a collector in Switzerland.
A VW radio went to Bangkok.
A LOT of old Valiant parts to Australia.
A T-Bird PS unit to England.
And a Lot of modern parts to Puerto Rico, which suprisingly enough qualifies for the flat rate box rule with the post office, yet under normal circumstances, someone there gets ripped off big time on shipping.
    and a lot more
    High bidder rules.
    An enthusiast, is an enthusiast.

That said, I had to learn to build a little "extra" into the shipping quote, as many times I get it wrong. And some people hate filling out the extra forms, and dealing with the "customs" BS.
Pay Pal works wonders, have not been ripped off yet by someone from another country..............but I also do not fall for the old "I'll send you a cashiers check and you send me back the difference."

The way I see it...ONLY HAMBer's keep tradition alive...and that tradition is now spread across the world...if my parts help keep their tradition going, I'll ship it to them if they'll take care of the extra costs involved...at least it'll keep one more old car on the roads...!!!

X2, sums up my thinking on this exactly.

  14. I have no problem selling cars or parts to overseas buyers. In most cases, they have become friends and good contacts...See my friends list. We are all here to have fun, help, educate and get educated with our old cars, projects and many times..personal situations....It's all good!!

I had 4 halibrand wheels on ebay a few years ago. The auction ended and the winner was from Australia. I said, Oh crap now what. I had no problems at all and the next summer at the nats in louisville a guy walks up to my car and introduces his self. Cool guy except he kept calling me "Mate" I kept telling him over here my only Mate is my wife. Small world.

At first, I thought it would be a hassle to ship stuff overseas, but the tiny bit of extra work has paid off in GREAT friendships around the world.
Last year, one of these friends, DanishDog on the HAMB, and his wife came and visited us. What a great visit!

Any HAMBer that needs my help getting parts... from Timbukto to Bangladesh... don't hesitate to let me know!

Hot rodding/customizing are international, have been for decades...I would sell to a hot rodder in Iran if he was really a hot rodder (probably not to Nigeria, though!!)

  18. When I did Ebay I always stated that I would not do offshore sales. Weeded out some trouble buyers and scams. If a true buyer sent me a note I gladly would accept a bid from him/her knowing their intentions and shipping arrangements.

As for the HAMB, I have always sold to fellow rodders from around the world.

I have sold cars and parts to people from all over the world. It is no big deal. Some folks are just scared. There is no reason for them to act like a jerk.

The only problem with overseas transactions is the byreaucratic baloney, luckily hotrodders are the same all over, and most of the foreigners seem to do alot of their own work, which is pretty cool also. Always try to buy American, export, I guess, would be part of that.

I guess I kind of get the thinking behind this - we have had a hell of a lot of our rare cars sold off to other countries (and didn't have that many to start with), and most of it was done by traders with no real interest in the cars, just out to make a buck:mad:

It's a different thing when it's entusiasts selling to fellow enthusiasts though - to me it shouldn't matter where in the world it's going to, or coming from then.

Across borders ? I know guys who won't sell out of state or to certain ones.:D The thing for me is my interest is by no means covered by the once big three. So what am I going to do when some guy sends me Nordic spec only vintage tail lights for my 56 VW? Tell him sorry I can't ship you a SW temperature gauge for your deuce because its a historic US part?:D

That said it is nice to keep certain things around by dealing with local guys. If you ever need it back its often no big deal to trade something else for it. The worst thing I've had is guys that beg for parts but then won't pay for them, want the same price in shipping world wide as next door, or wanting parts marked as a gift. Cheap asses are everywhere though...

  25. This guy is the exception, certainly not one of the majority.

The world is a MUCH smaller place now, it's not the 50's any more. Hot Rodding, custom bikes, vintage racing are enjoyed by enthusiats all over the world, most of whom will buy & sell & trade, no matter where the other person is located.

I worked at a parts store in the way early 80s. The guy who owned the shop accross the street was an Iraqi. His brother lived in france. We palletized generators, starters, tuneup kits and all manner of stuff which ended up in Cuba. We started putting Hot Rod and Car Craft etc. mags in the boxes. We got a letter from a dude in Cuba letting us know that was the Buenoest thing that he' ever seen.

If you are an enthusiast and live in a foreign country I say so what! I helped ship a Norwegian friend of mine a 55 Chevy. I just wished our governments would stay out of business transactions. The duties are terrible! I am not worried about American steel leaving. There is a lot of iron to go around and who says it can't come back!

Most folks just do not want to deal with the extra paperwork for customs. I mean that form takes an extra 45 seconds to fill out!
