Interestingly one of Shells scenarios takes into acount a backlash against globalism and looks at re-branding themselves as a number of small local energy companies. they call this scenario "Prisim". You may find your "local" companies are the majors in disguise.

I like the idea of small comunity energy suppliers, but would that help cities the size of New York or London?

It will be interesting to see what the changes will come, I supose the only thing we can be sure of is it will change.

Any way when the oil runs out/ gets too expensive maybe we should be fitting 97's and running on alchohol? :)

    Makes sense.
At least competition will be greater and maybe energy prices will be more reasonable and without as much speculation. But I am not holding my breath.

Ever since I got my truck in the mid 90s, I've been thinking how I can still drive my carbureted old cast iron inliner efficiently and continuously for the rest of my life.

Converting to home-distilled alcohol or using propane has always been on my mind.
I really don't know enough about hydrogen, but if I could use it one day without major mods to my engines, I would do that.

Me neither, on the hydrogen front...Alchohol seems hardcore enough though. Maybe this should be a new thread? Whose got experience of running alchohol?

I'd really like to build my projects for ethanol. The beauty of ethanol is that it lends itself to small-scale manufacture quite well, much better than digging expensive holes in foreign countries does. It would fit very well into a scenario where vehicles are made in very small numbers but in a very great variety: all cars are hot rods!

Take a look at this: http://journeytoforever.org/ethanol.html

I'm expecting a world-wide ideological split on approaches to the environment. I'm an eco-localist and therefore vehemently opposed to eco-authoritarianism; but I'm having a lot of trouble convincing people that you can't be both. Wars will be fought over this.

I don't see much use for hydrogen, though.

A rooftop photovoltaic array can generate enough power to split water into oxygen and hydrogen on a daily basis to provide commute fuel. Honda has already demonstrated it. AND, here's a link to the hydrogen land speed record, set at 197 mph in an old, historic chassis by Jesse James.
