My horn ring has a 1/4 long crack (see toothpik in photo) that does not go thru to the other side. I think all that has to be done to fix it is to "V" it and fill it in. I want to fix it but don't want to ruin the horn ring. I have a Henrob Torch and am pondering my next move as I have never "welded" pot metal. Any tips or suggestions welcome.
My advice is unless It's easy to replace don't practice on it First. I use a Jewelers torch not a Henrob and first thing to do is strip the Chrome to prevent contamination (Pin holes, perosity) in the weld. I also use a Copper backer for a heat sink. It's not hard but it's also not that easy or more people would be doing it. Find a Pro and save your nice Horn Ring. The Wizzard
It's difficult to weld potmetal with chrome on it. If your going to have it rechromed have your local shop strip it. It can be welded with Harris /Welco #5260 zinc alloy. It will be difficult to heat the center thin part & the thicker bar with out the center colapsing. use some heat damn to support it. Muggy Wed Super Alloy 1 is a low temp solder that will work if you don't feel confident with the higher temp to weld. I have mixed results with this stuff & talked to Muggy Jr at pdx swap & he tells me to use less heat & more flux. I have been welding pot for 30 years & it is hard to reverse my actions for the solder. If you not going to have ot rechromed the best bet is to use JB Weld & maybe cut a sheet metal piece to reinforce it if it won't interfer with the fit. Search the forum for lots of other opinions.
