The temperature dropped about 15 degrees yesterday and my galaxie started up and the engine began to race. This thing has an electric choke. When I close the choke flap all the way shut, the engine dies. If it is open too much, the engine races. How can I adjust the choke? Should I mess with the mixture? If your looking at the mixture screws... which way would I turn them? I am worried that I will get them so far out of whack that I wont be able to fix it. My carb looks like this, but mine has that electric bowl thing where the choke is connected. http://carcraft.com/techarticles/p5710_image_large.jpg Everyone around here says they are real easy to tune, but I have no clue what I am doing
Sounds to me like the fast idle cam is sticking. Look at the left side (throttle not choke side) of the carb. There you will see the fast idle cam/linkage. Spray this with carb cleaner/penetrating oil and free-up the cam. Don't touch the idle mixture screws as what you have is a choke problem. Make sure you have power to your electric choke and if nessaccary, you can leanout the choke by turning the choke cap the direction indicated on the cap. Hope this helps.
Yeahhh like he said... set the choke and crack the throttle open to allow the fast idle cam to disengage...sounds like its set too much choking action-I set the choke on a cold morning say like this. Loosen the three screws on choke hsg and hold throttle slightly open and turn the choke housing till the flap just barely shuts then tighten the three screws and warm it up.then shut it off and see if the flap is wide open as it should be. that is real close... also a Carter carb requires a regulator to regulate the pump pressure down to an acceptable amount of fuel pressure. ALSO A POSSIBLE VACUUM LEAK
Thanks for the tip man. I adjusted the choke more lean. It helped. I think it just takes a little longer to warm up and idle down when it's cold even thought the choke is set close to correct. You guys rock check out my other post... I just sold my car and am feeling Goooood
[ QUOTE ] also a Carter carb requires a regulator to regulate the pump pressure down to an acceptable amount of fuel pressure. [/ QUOTE ] Tell me more. I have a 625AFB and a mechanical Carter pump that is supposed to put out 120gph at 6.5psi.
Im no carb expert- I just heard that and it suprised me as I have had many Edelbrocks and thought the Carters were same as them. -Then I was told the Carter needs a lower [3-4 PSI]as opposed to an edlebrocks handling 4-7psi [before overiding the needle/seat and flooding.
My Carter seems to always get covered in fuel on the outside. Always wondered why it leaked so much. New gaskets and tightened the screws. Kinda runs a little rich sometimes too. I'll look into this a little more. Never have got the stupid electric choke to work right.
