I'm looking for a 39 mopar overdrive transmission, because it is top shift... but I have no idea what the 39 box looks like. Does anyone have a picture? Schematic? drawing? Anything! Help! thanks, Chris
1939 Chryslers and DeSotos might have had overdrive (they did by 1940-41) but they already had column shifters. The 39 Mopars with floor shifters would not have had overdrive. Long ago, I read about mating up a pre-war top-shift transmission with an overdrive unit, probably from the same period, but they did not come from the same cars.
From what I uderstand from George Asche the 39 top shifts did have overdrives... can anyone confirm this?
My 1948 Motors manual has a different trans removal procedure listed for 39 Chrysler and DeSoto trans equipped with overdrive so it sounds like it was available.
I can't recall the details right now, but the early O.D. was a simpler version. Ask Todd Fitch over at P15-D24. I'm pretty sure he's the one who knows the early stuff. Search the archive there too. I'm sure it has been discussed.
I saw one for sale several years ago - I've been looking for a pic or info eversice. I believe the trans was a Warner gear unit - the OD was not identified but looked like the later BW unit.
