I've got a brand new 460 short block from a local Ford dealership, I haven't taken the plastic off of it yet, but we did open up the plastic to look for the stamped numbers under the p***enger side head. There wasn't any stamped number but there was a sticker with a date on it, 2/24/97. On my other parts motor, I think it's a D0VE block, and it has a number stamped, but I'm wondering if all the 460's can be swapped. What I want to do is use all the parts, brackets, heads, intake, exhaust, oil pan and everything else on the short block. I'd like to find out before I completely tear down the D0VE block.

You help is appreciated!!! thanks Fellas!

I think the only difference is the top end. Later 460s used different heads, valve covers and intakes. The bottem end should be the same. I can check with our parts department (ford dealer) but that could take some time, they don't like to look up the old stuff. Let me know

Make sure you use the right flywheel. Dove motor are internal balance and the 1979 and up are external balance.

You should be good to go except for the flywheel as has been mentioned.

    Thanks for the help fellas!!!!

  8. There are some differences between the years, both on the upper end & inside the block. If I'm reading your post correctly, you want to use your older heads/etc. on this newer short block.

You should be able to do so as long as you use the heads & intake as a set. If you had late EFI heads on this new block, for example, you can't use a carb intake with them...you would have to use old heads/old intake, or EFI heads/EFI intake.

The newer engine, if it is a D9TE block, will have an externally balanced crank, so you will need to use an externally balanced flexplate or flywheel....the D0VE block will have an internally balanced flexplate/flywheel.

The last thing to consider is the compression ratio; depending on the head castings and the pistons (EFI or '73-up) you will have a couple of different possibilities here. If you can track down the casting numbers, we can narrow things down a bit.

Another thing to keep in mind, some years of 460 used an external weight between the front cover and the balencer, not sure what years did/didn't but it should be something to look into

460s got EFIs in 89. Intake and exhaust will NOT fit. I would think heads will. I dont think you will have a DOVE block in 97.

If its a newer short block, you should have the crank spacer with the balance weight...but, if not, the weighted ( new ) one is still available from Ford, the old one is not.

Yes I have a D0VE block... I also have a new 460 that's wrapped in plastic... read what I typed big dad!

  15. Check the pilot area in the crank. I seem to remember that some have a smaller bore for manual versus torque converter.

The engine numbers are on the back of the block. D9ve, the D is 7 that is a 1979 motor. D0ve, the D is 7 that is a 1970 motor. Ford # work like this c is 6, d is 7, e is 8.

If its a late block, pull the timing cover add a fuel pump eccentric, unless you plan to use an electric pump.

  20. 429/460 block numbers will be on the right side (USA p***enger side, that is :D ); head numbers are usually on the third exhaust port from the left. If there are no numbers there on the head, then they are on the bottom of one of the intake ports & you can see them (sometimes) by removing the intake manifold & using a mirror. Anything made before the mid '80s should have it on the exhaust port as a rule.

Dirty, BTW, the internal spacers are still available from a couple of places, both in steel or aluminum...BF Evans Ford has them http://bfevansraceparts.com/default.aspx . Or, the weighted spacers can be turned down or ground if absolutely necessary.

Thanks! I know Ford no longer offers 'em...did not know anyone else did still make them.
We just took a weighted one and put it in the lathe, as you said above.
