Rochester 4gc flooding

My '63 Impala has a 327 with a stock 4GC on it. It runs fine, but when i shut the car off, fuel pours down the inside of the carb and floods the engine out. Any ideas what might be causing this?

 

How hot is it? Can you touch it with your bare hand?

 

crud in the needle/seat,or the floats got holes in'em and are sinking.

 

Front or back or both sides? Check fuel pressure and if only one side the needle/seat. As hubcap said how hot is the carb getting? If the heat riser on the exhaust manifold is stuck shut or close to it a lot of the exhaust gases will be going under the carb base making it get to hot and boiling the fuel when you shut off.

 

it looks to me like its coming from both ends. the heat riser is tied wide open, and the carb doesnt seem like its excessively hot. as far as the needle and seats go, the carb was remanufactured when i bought it, and ive had it apart at least 10 times now, so there cant be anything affecting them. headaches...

 

Sounds like a stuck float. I think 4GC carbs have three.

 

1. float too high (probably not, if it runs OK)
2. needle & seat leaking
3. fuel pressure too high
4. vapor lock (but that will stop after a few seconds)

 

4GC's have soldered together br*** floats. Make sure they're not leaking. #1 guess is ****ola in the needle and seat.
