as you know, i don't throw away any sheet metal, , ,i was trying to figure out how to build a rolled pan for the front of the car, and i came up with this idea. i took a pair of s**** fenders from my s**** pile, and after some slicing and dicing, i put together this rolled pan,,,it still needs finishing,,,the part that wraps around the sides, etc,,,but it was ridiculously easy,,,and the best part, it was free. . .
I did a simular project some years back. I had a 36 Ford headlight and cut 1/4 sections out of it and made the corners. Worked out pretty good as I remember, it was a rear roll pan though. Same Idea. The Wizzard
thanks for the tip,,,that could work perfectly, as i dont have any severe compound curves in my s**** pile,,
wow man,,,,,,,,,,,what a GREAT idea,,,thanks for sharing that is that a 60 mercury grille?...too cool...
I've been wondering if a front or rear roof section from another car could be cut out and flipped upside down to make a rolled pan. I'm wishing in fact that I had cut that out of the '60 Chrysler 4dr I junked last summer to see just what I could do with it. I bet the fenders of a new Beetle might yield some good compound curves, too, if the metal is workable. Who knows, between it being a VW and a new car. By the way, just to further prove the point that it pays to save sheetmetal pieces, I did discover by accident that you could replace the roof side panels on a Model A pickup or maybe a coupe with the tops of 63-64 Pontiac fenders. It would give you three ribs down each side, but the rest of the shape works fine. If a guy was doing a show-rod styled Model A, or just desperate for top tin... that's one spot those Pontiacs don't seem to rot in, so it shouldn't be too bad to find otherwise junk fenders to cut up (I'd bet Olds or Chevy fenders might yield similar pieces as well).
thats why i keep all the s**** around,,there are so many different compound curves,,,,much easier than way less time consuming than trying to make something from scratch,,,especially for me,,i'd probably have to remake it several times before it was even close to being ok to use..i hate wasting time.....
Looks good man, the front end of this thing is really taking some serious shape! Ive got a pile of s**** Merc fenders that are too rough to fix, but man, when you need that "one" curve, it beats not having that stuff!
thanks chris, , , , for those of us that aren't so skilled with an english wheel/planishing hammer, that stuff can definitley be a godsend
One of my favorite sports is walkin through parking lots eyein' different panel shapes on vehicles! I've been eyein' my ''yuppie" neighbors Honda mini van. The slider door has jus the crown I need for a roof insert. If she parks it partially blocking my drive one more time, next moonless night I may pounce, battery saw in hand! The use of previously shaped panels from other vehicles is "very traditional" in the kustom world, jus' look at some of Metzes' work! S****y Devils c.C. " All great truths begin as blasphemies!"
we keep a lot of s****e around for the same resones. no tools but a lot of good ideas come from the stuff. ya thats a 60 merc grill too..jones
