when i was learing to be a steam engineer i spent time all over town sweeping, painting pipes and floors,to spend time learning hi pressure boilers. swept floors in a local electric motor repair shop to learn any thing i could. did the same in a welding shop. i was in school each step of learning trying to forge viable employment as i had a mortgage and child support. damm near turned into a zombie doing it even though i was only in my early 20's. i would have paid for the experience as it paid off countless times. let 7-11 pay the kid and see how hungry he is to learn. then if he decides to run off chasing split tail you won't feel so bad about your efforts.

  2. We can only guess- obviously you and him have to discuss your wants, expectations, etc. $10/hr is $160 a weekend. A month is $640. Can you afford it?

    WOW!
you folks really poured your souls into this! thank you all SO MUCH!
i truly appreciate your efforts and will read this MANY times.
i wish i had given more info up front ( i feel like i've cheated you )
first, this is a personal endeavor... only hobby and family at stake.

he "seems" interested and i wanna give him a try at learning what i know. my dad tought me the basics (growing up on a farm MAKES you learn certain things) and then my mind went crazy from there. everyone in my family thinks im a crazy car freak. i guess they are right.

his dad was the suit type (while he was around) and didnt teach him anything except how to make himself disappear.

he asked me about 4 years ago if he could work on my 63 truck (at the farm) with my dad's supervision... i said no and still feel bad.

i'll be working right beside him so he cant stray too far from the line without me catching it. i just gotta figure out how not to OVERREACT if i do! ;-)

i like the min wage idea... i was thinking that "he was making **.** dollars at his old job" but it didnt relate to cars! he is starting something new so i'll probably hit him with the min wage and see how that pans out.
if he will just BUST ***, i will pay him more.

even if he just learns basic stuff that can save him some money down the road by fixing it himself, i will be happy!

    thanks again all!
I REALLY AM AMAZED BY THE RESPONSE AND THOUGHT!

I say food and beer forever....unless you turn this into a business and you are profiting from his time. he is getting way more out of this relationship than you are.....he will learn a ton, and you will have a bunch of busted tools.

Just can't win with family and money.

much the same here, I worked for a local guy who had been building for many years and had had several centerfold cars as well as being a staple in tucsons hotrod roots. He hired me @ 10 an hour at a time when I had been layed off and was struggling, and tought me how to weld and dropped more knowledge on me about early fords than I thought one person could know. So you can help him out and also maybe get him into rodding
