Mallory dual point distributors help needed

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jrblack30, Sep 7, 2009.

  1. I have an old Mallory "R" type distributor and I am looking for piece parts. Who is selling the caps, rotors and points. Hope to get this old distributor back up and running.

The distributor is a R model 12A type 7222 serial number.

    2 piece cap
    Top hat #22030
    rubber insert # 22033
    Cap # 22001

    Rotor # 22039

    Points # ????

    Any help appreciated.

Off hand - Mallory , Summit and many more suppliers . You can also Google for help in finding parts for your Mallory .

  3. UMMMMM , Yeah tried that but they don't seem to have parts for a 50+ year old distributor and I wouldn't expect them to have any. That is why I asked here. Guess I should have said a very VERY old distributor.

It's fun trying to get this old stuff to work. It's better than taking the easy way out and running an HEI or some other 1-800 part.
I would give Billy Belmont a call. He's always scrounging the swap meets. You've got part numbers which is a big help.

Man i was just talkin to a buddy about these units, while they are cool for sure no body makes new parts for em.you can get the points stuff i think, but the caps and rotor are not available anymore.you may get lucky and find somebody at a swap meet with some nos stuff but what happens when you are 100 miles from home and something fails?the rotors on these ride directly against the terminals(it looks like to me)inside the cap wich in turn will make them wear alot quicker also probability of failure is higher.there is a reason people are unloading them at swaps for 25-30bucks.

I am going to run a Mallory Dual Point Dizzy in my '35 so I wouldn't mind the info also.

Estate and yard sales. I picked up a box with 15 vw tune-up kits and real S/W guages with senders etc for 25.00. The guy infront of me didnt see the guages but did see the RAC tach and vacuum meter.

  9. Mallory does not have any service parts available for a distributor of the vintage. It actually predates the YL, YC etc. The distributor uses a 2 piece cap which uses a rubber grommet in the middle of the sandwich to secure the wires.

  10. I had a mallory dual point for a while behind my tunnelram and I cussed that damn thing everytime I drove it. I'd adjust them, and bamn....not 2miles later, running like hell. I had an allen wrench right on my keychain. Just impossible to keep up with.

It was pretty old unit, but not a two piece cap. Still big pain in the rear.

I changed to a unilite. Have an orig. dist. with a pertronix kit that is awesome, too....but the polished intake looks better with the Mallory behind it.

I just checked the Mallory Dist list I have and a model 012 is listed to fit a Packard/Graham-Paige 6 cylinder.

I too thought about running an older Mallory for my Continental engine but worried about finding points, rotors, etc. If you really like the look of the Mallory, why not just upgrade it to electronic and hide an HEI module, etc. (like one of Bubba's conversions...) Then you have the traditional look with over the counter ignition parts (except cap, rotor, etc.) I did find a new cap and rotor on Ebay though...

I am looking for spares before I decide to run this one. It is going in my 34 with Caddy power and it is a very tight fit. This distributor fits but the larger will not without modifying the firewall.
