I have a 53 Willys Aero. I am pretty sure first gear is unsynchronized but I am having trouble down shifting into second without getting that annoying grinding sound. Only happens when I am down shifting, have no trouble going from 1st to 2nd. Bad syncros or is that just the way it is? The car is stock btw.

How many miles on it? Down into 2nd without double clutching is the first place a worn synchro will show up.

  4. Pull with both hands. Put one foot against the dash for extra leverage if need be.

Thanks for the replies. A few more tidbits of info, the clutch is pretty worn out, must be why there was a new clutch disc in the truck. Also I noticed that the pressure plate must be pretty weak. I can dump the clutch and the car still takes off smoothly because of how slowly the pressure plate releases. Also does anyone know if the Willys Aero uses a T-96 transmission? I heard it somewhere but I can't confirm it. Any way I can ID the trans? If it is a T-96 found new syncros for like 130 bucks.

My 47 Kaiser does the same thing.
If i put it in nutreal and let the clutch out then push the clutch in and then downshift it works better

Hmmm, sounds like a bad idea  Just sayin'. The more lazy way would be welding a piece of pipe on the shifter for more leverage ;)

KaiserKruiser, I'll try that. I think that must have been what double clutching is but no one ever really explained it to me. Right now the cash is pretty low so maybe I can limp around like that for a while.
