Same thing i was thinking. Take the good with the stuff that doesn't appeal to you. The magazine isn't put out just for you. Go read Rod and Custom and you'll feel all better. There are lots of people that don't dig traditional stuff either but that doesn't make that wrong either. Personally when i see the 80's stuff it makes me smile and realize how far i've come.

So you're all worked up just because they had a few articles in one issue about cars from the 1980s? That's not my favorite era either, but you can't expect every single article in every issue to cover only your particular interests. They have to try to cover all aspects of the hobby, and I think they've been doing a pretty good job.

HAH..those air shocks were great!..I remember how cool we thought we were because we hid the fill valves behind a flip down license plate...the guy at the gas station would come out to the air pump and lecture us about how they were not for jacking up the rear of the car, but who didn't use them for that ?... we were dumb *** kids - " just mind your own business pal .. hey Joe stick another 10 lbs in and lets see how she sits....! In September, Bill McGuire. Detroit Ediitor of Hot Rod Magazine
went to the 2009 Relix Riot at the Gilmore Car Museum and took
photos. He mentioned to flynbrian, me and possibly others that
he would like to photograph our cars (mine is a chopped 57 Buick)
for Hot Rod Magazine, In my case nothing happened, but Brian
had his photo shoot of his 36 Ford for Hot Rod Magazine. So
they are out there photographing H.A.M.B friendly cars.
Complaining for what they don't do should be replaced with
e-mails and writing to the magazine to let them know what
    we appreciate.

Bill McGuire GETS it as does Hot Rod Magazine and Hot Rod Deluxe. Bill actually came to the Hunnert Car Pileup two years ago, had a couple beers with us and told me that "this is the vibe" and "this is what it is all about." Cool dude and DEFINITELY a HAMB-cool guy!

I totally agree. This is my 50th year of subscribing to Hot Rod, and I'm considering this will be my last. HRM needs to go back and look at it's roots and what the icons of their past did to make it great.

Hey, $1000 was a whole summer wages at the Dog-n-Suds drive in where I worked one summer during school. But all the money was always spent on cars.

That old rag top convertible started out as a 283 with a 3 speed someone stuck in it, and it had no top at all (just the frame) when I drug it home. A single track 10 bolt rear and ***orted rust, dents and missing parts rounded out the package. But it was a Rally Sport convertible and it was mine.

Soon a hot rodded engine with a tunnel ram, dual fours, a close ratio Muncie with Hurst shifter and a 12 bolt posi made it better. Just simple hot rodding no matter the vehicle. That car took me to spring break in Fort Lauderdale 25 hours one way more than once and has many memories.

Yeah, I enjoyed the December issue, for many different reasons.

It was more of a mild mannered joke.

Of course I like just about anything with a motor.

It it's just about what I like.

I know there are a million different tastes out there. It just seems like the last thing I would expect to see.

I dig every issue. I always learn something. I read it cover to cover every month and have since I was 8 years old.

I just had to laugh and give the magazine some **** cause some thing are just goofy.

    Like the 80's...

Hey, they flew a photog from LA to Detroit to photograph my car this week, I'm not gonna complain! I like magazine, always have. Like others, I'm not real interested in some of the features, but, if you can't learn something from it every month, you're not gonna learn anything, anywhere. I don't like every feature in R&C, Street Rodder, or any other magazine either, and generally speaking, HOT ROD's tech stuff is better. Not just advertising for whatever product is featured, a complaint I have with some of the other magazines.

Oh, re: the 80's... We thought we were cool! At least I never built a pro street J2000... I thought HR did that as a retro look back, not to say we should all do the street freak thing.

The 1980s was over 20 years ago, it was automotive history, just like in the '80s HR would run some things on what was going on in the '60s, it's only reporting on what happened back then.

Look at some of the old 1980s issues of the magazine, the ones with the listings of the sales / subscription numbers, they were doing pretty well, people were buying a lot of parts, the types of cars they featured were pretty mainstream. Like it or not, there's a lot of people that grew up in that era that are now getting to the age where they'd like to go "back," and it may include building a car that was typical of the 1980s.

At the Rt 66 event in San Bernardino I saw at least one old revived muscle car with a jacked up rear end, that was the rage in part of the 70s and 80s, it all will come back to a certain degree. Just like van craze.

Hot Rod was never exclusively "traditional," the magazine always had off-the-wall editorial coverage, including pickups, dune buggies, imports (the 70s) and big time custom vans. Thumb through the oldies, they even had a "Lifesaver VW Beetle" that Holly Hedrich got in some serious hot water over, as the newsstand sales of that issue tanked.

The 1980's were the "Made in Taiwan" era. Speaks for its self.

There's a TON more stuff coming from that part of the world NOW than back then, automotive aftermarket wise.
