so I am on ebay last night.. and saw this cool mike Williams built 36/ 40 ford convert
the cowl and front clip is 36 ford.. the rear of the car is 40 ford..

    so It got me thinking..

say I had a 36 car cowl.. how likely would it be that I could graft a 40 ford "upper cowl" to the bottom of a 36 cowl hence resulting in a 36 ford car with a split windshield??

  2. I guess anything is possible. This is a friends 35 ford 2-door sedan.

I don`t know why you couldn`t ...If the `36 hood didn`t fit the upper flat area of the cowl top. you could split the cowl top or modify the hood to fit...It`s just metal...and you`ve got a welder...

If anyone could do it successfully, I'd think it would be you. Sounds like a great idea to me, Jeff. Slice 'n Dice!

thats kinda what I am thinking.. as I have a ROUGH 40 woodie cowl top thats too rough to sell.. but good enough for me..

this silly idea came to me as I reviewed all the JUNK.. er quality parts, I have around.. the upper cowl is a good fit, because I have a spare and because I have an extra 40 woodie header to fit it..

I think that this would make the purists scratch their heads.. and would combine the best of many worlds.. IE. the split windscreen of a 40, and the front clip of the 36..

I was mostly worried that the 36 cowl was signifigantly narrower than the 40..

    perhaps it is NOT?

I don't know about the width issue, but if it is a problem why not just graft the windshield/header area itself?

You'll make that work a lot faster & cheaper than you'll find a '36 woodie cowl.

    Chop, chop.

as long as the profile is close, narrowing the side to side width would be very simple.
Gl*** size don't matter, get new cut to size of new opening.

If you do it Jeff you gotta have a build thread on it... it's only metal!

Roadstar here on the HAMB built a '40 coupe with a convertible/cabrolet front windshield giving him a split windshield a few years ago. There were quite a few pictures on here when he finished it. If they don't come up maybe you could Pm him and ask what exactly he did.

Still around today... (think its the same car)

I know... no V-Windshield but rather a chopped 36 Ford one... but it shows the combination of 36 back and 40 Front.

Also not what you are looking for but this is a 37 Ford body with a 1940 Ford front end grafted on...

I think the width is real close to being the same..The holes in the frame where the cowl bolts down are in the same place as the `40...The frames are the same width from `35 through `40.

check out the thread on the '36 3Window that was on eBay. it had a '40 upper cowl grafted to it, but not well done IMO.

Any chance you have some pics of the body conversion in progress?

I put a narrowed and chopped 49 Ford windshield frame on my 36, since I wanted a V'ed two piece windshield. I cut the 36 cowl behind the hood opening lip so the hood would still fit. The width doesn't matter, I narrowed the 49 windshield frame about 11 in.

Here's a couple pics of my 36 with the 49 Ford windshield installed-not finished yet.
