I was just wondering if 50 mercurys were more desireable than 49s and 51s? I just read it somewhere and was curious.

I don't know about that. There are big fans of each year out there. Ask a guy with a 49 and he'll tell you the 49 is the most popular. Ask a guy with a 51 and he'll tell you the 51 is the most popular.

I am talking about actual value of the car. For example. I hate 57 chevys and love my 56, I know 57's are more desireable and go for more money than 56s. Same thing with 53 and 54 chevys, 54s seem to go for more money and be more desireable. Im just curios.

I am the proud owner of a '49 but really always wanted a '51 because of the extended rear fenders. As the '49 was the first year of the body style there were some problems with shifting tubes but these were modified mid-year. Now that I have my '49 done I prefer it to the '51's. Big difference between the '49 and '50 was the erar window, door handles and dashboard. The '49 dashboard is preferred by most Merc owners and many '50 & '51 owners have replaced them with '49's.

I like the 50's because of the dash... don't care for the rear fenders on 51's. that's how I look at it.

as for value, the most expensive Mercs are heavily modified so I'd say it doesn't matter what year it is.

I like 51's best because the back end. 49's and 50's look like a snubbed **** to me. But the 49 rear window is nicer (in my opinion). 49-51 mercs are usually all lumped together like 55-57 chevy's and shoebox fords.

I would say the 49 and 50 two doors are. I personally dont like them I like the 51's because of the back fenders come out further than the trunk. It has more style to me. The 49 and 50's look to stumpy in the back in my eyes. Plus people have the cow effect thing going so they all follow what everyone else has or wants I tend to go the other direction. The only problem with that is resale value = ) I had a 51 more door and loved it. to answer your question you will get more money for a 50.

(Just saw what church said) great minds think alike = )

With all other variables being equal, I don't think you can say (or prove) that a '50 is more valuable than a '49 or '51. They're just too close to differ much.

I think an argument can be made that the '49 may be more valuable because of James Dean and because it was the first slab-sided Merc.

I have a '51 and prefer my rear quarters, but not my front grille opening.

They are my favorite car, all time. Just never had the money in my pocket at any time one of them was available to me. One time a couple of years ago there was a bone stock one the guy wanted 5k for. I only had 3k. Would never go beyond my mad money for any car. What year was it? It was a 49 or 50, that wouldn't matter in the least.

I'll agree with Mikes51Merc. I believe Merc owners value their cars more in a non monetary way, because they like the styling, looks. I like my '51 because I prefer the slightly more m***ive, heavy look with it's larger bumpers. I like the longer look of the '51's. I can see '49 50 Merc owners preferring those models because they are more minimalist, less heavy looking, and with less chrome.

BTW, I just cut away the panel below my hood and fabbed a new one even with the hood. It was pretty easy.

Here's a good pic that shows the different esthetics of the 49-50 compared to the '51. That's my '51 on the left. I prefer a wider, m***ive grille because it makes the car look wider. Although I have to admit, it's hard to beat the rounded scoop look of a 49-50 grill shell with another shell inverted below the top one.

    Dannyego,
As far as your question on actual monetary value, I suppose one could look up the charts to find which year has the lowest production numbers. Then the most rare, un available would be worth the most. Now we are talking about stockers.

If we are talking about custom Mercs, I would say a Merc with the best quality, best shaped chop would be worth the most, regardless of year.

My 2 cents. I just sold my beautiful 36 Ford 3-W coupe and going after a 1949- 50 Mercury, I have had a custom 51 Merc, dont like the rear window or the extended fenders, I like the grill openings better and the shorter appearing body styles. I am still kickin my *** for selling my 1950 Monarch.

Really nice Monarch. The front end is interesting, almost has a "Cadillac" look to it in this photo.

i personal like the 49 because of the dash itself....the waterfall dash the 50-51 offers isnt as cool as the 49.

people have there own preference....i think the 1950 was used more in movies.

just like model a's Vs. 1932 deuces.

the 32' was used more in the movies and are a bit more rare.

I don't think you can say that one year is more valuable,or more desireable, for that matter. I think it's just about personal preferance. Some guys like the 51's,cause of the rear fenders, some don't. Most prefer the '49 dash though. One thing that is for sure, the 49-51 Woody is the most valuable.

sometimes it is when your looking at a car you might have to sell in the future. Unfortunately you cant keep them all. Or at least I cant:mad:

Great photos. I like to see shots like that to compare. It is easier than walking around a show and trying to remember what you looked at. I usually forget my camera when I go to a show for some reason, or I am sitting at home thinking about the differences and I don't have anything to reference.
