  1. in TJR 45, while reading about John Munfords 33 coupe it says how he leaned the grille back to match the cowl angle. now ive always thought this is the way to go, but dont see it that much. how many people here have layed thier grilles back? pics please? i did a search and found a thread about leaning them forward??? sorry Kirk, your car rocks but Johns 33 is my fav in this issue. a very cool hot rod!

i think it looks wonky. like the car can't quite hold itself together...

and i love mumfrod's car. but if it were mine, i'd kick the top of the grille to straighten it out right quick.

Looks silly and even though I am not expert, that car in TRJ missed the mark I think.

  6. it looks like the stock position is the most favored. ive always thought the stock look dosent flow very well.

Mine is leaned a little, but not enough to match the cowl angle:

Nailheads are long, so the radiator is as far back as it'll go. I played with kicking the grill out more towards the bottom, but it looked weird. In the end, I liked this stance the best.

A lot of folks put the radiator in stock upright position and 'really' slant the grill. I've never been a fan of that though because is creates a big gap between the shell and radiator face.

If no hood or fenders, match the cowl.

  12. I think it really depends on the build. Too high looks more funny to me that tilted. I prefer stock angle best, but a lot of my favorite 33/34s are slightly angled. Not cartoony super plastic streetrod angled, just slightly.

  13. Damn Delmo! That's a tough lookin' sob ! Nicely done.

I know this is a crappy picture but....When I did a 3" chop I leaned the A pillar back 10 degrees. The grill shell is going to be leaned back at the same angle as the A pillar.
Another deciding factor on leaning the grill back is that the body is channeled 6" which essentially puts the grill shell's chin on the ground. By leaning back to match the A pillar it gives me 4" of clearance to the ground. I'll just have to extend the hood tops & sides a bit now.

  15. My grille is angled a little more than stock, it is also sectioned.

  16. Ya got 3 angles: the grille, the cowl and the windshield. IMHO they all need to be the same to work if you're going to mess with mother nature.*

p.s. I HATE 34 type louvers in the hood of an up and down car like an A or Deuce, it might be trick, but it clashes.

*I should have added Kirk's pic illustrates my point very well I think.

If you can afford a 33, 34 grille do what ever you want with it.

  18. thats a very nice car Chopt 34. nice stance and it flows well. im an artist so flow is very important to me. still, it looks as though the stock grille is the favorite.

It just depends on the build. If you're going more toward traditional Hot Rod, stock position is more fitting. If you're leaning toward 80's street rod leaned way back is better.

  20. Thanks Kiwipackard, I would build your car however you want, as long as you are happy with the look. I personally like the grille leaned back a little. Another thing that is more critical (in my opinion) in setting up a 33-34 grille on a high boy is the relation of the front edge of the tire to the edge of the grille and the relationship of the lights to the grille. When the grille is set way forward of the tires it can throw off the graceful lines of the Model 40.

i like delmo's. and i can appreciate what kirk is doing there. it does look well thought out. and with what i am assuming is an angled channeling job on chopt34's, the sectioned and leaned grille looks good too.

i guess, when you just throw that idea out into the air, my mind latches on to all the terrible things i have seen done with 33-34 grilles. and i shudder.

and for me, my 3w is gonna be post war, flatty powered, and i am going to use the inner fenders, and sometimes a hood. so, stock location for me.

and my 5w is gonna be pretty heavily channeled, and i'm not using a stock grille, so...i guess i'm just letting you in on my perspective. for whatver that's worth...

A guy I know started to build this car in the traditional Bonneville style around 20 years ago,.... to the best of my knowledge, it still sits just like this. the grill is leaned back to match the canted A pillar and the hood angle at the back which to the best of my memory are the same,.... (I have always liked this 3/W, and won't apologize for it.... ) it has to be on the right car, with the right stance and proportions.

They get too much chin leaned back, IMHO.

I like both, as long as you dont swap it for that truck grill Im happy. The 33-34's are just plain beautiful if done right...
