does anyone have any vintage pics of action at great lakes dragaway in union grove wis.? ive been racing there seince i was 13 years old. i still get excited when i see the KR exit.
I can remember racing with our FC here the same weekend as the US Nats in Indy .. going back inforth to qualify for both shows
I have lots of pics and movies from when my Dad raced there in the 60s. Any chance you recognize the car? Its a 1964 Pontiac GTO called "L'il Pete". He bought it new in 64 and still has it. I am hoping he will bring it out to the Hunnert Car Heads Up next year.
Here is my Fiat Topolino runnin' @ Da'Grove around 1968. I also have about 2 hours of footage on dvd from the late 60's. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZZbEqA-N1ag&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZZbEqA-N1ag&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
the 1956 BA pic is from the photo collection belonging to the gentleman and his wife that bought the land and built Great Lakes Dragaway in 1955 and it's not BB. Here is a pic of my 34, running at GLD, 1959. Sold it about 1960, to someone in Illinois. If, anybody recognizes the 34, I would appreciate a contact. It is one of the few local old rods and customs that, I lost track of and have not been able to find the car or a trail. Curt
I remember the days the stands were packed and the tree's in the background were full of people as well. And Pbrmeasap... Bob was normally tipsey... Hahaha...!
that was his 75th b-day party at the track....or some b-day like that...he almost fell off that thing, funny to watch and we had beers together that night.
Anyone remember a Yellow 55 chevy that ran there in the mid 60's through the late 60's or early 70's? Painted Shell Yellow with black brush painted "Yellow Jacket" on the sides? 301 cid on the front fender big Shell sticker on the trunk lid, home made scoop?
This is some great stuff! We hope to get some of the old racers to bring their cars out (and race them) at the Grove in May at the Hunnert Car Heads-up! http://www.hunnertcarpileup.com/headsup
back to the vintage photos, ok my vintage, or BFC (before funny cars) or BFX (before factory experimental), kinda when most, not all, of the drag cars were grass roots, garage built, home brew. The young guys can post the late 60's and 70's vintage pics. These pics are Great Lakes Dragaway opening day, 1957. Not much for cool car pics but, put your self in the picture, can you get a feeling for how we felt and all the new things that we were experiencing?
Great Lakes Dragaway 1957. Both cars were street driven. The A rdstr had aluminum nose, bellypan, hood. Full flathead, Tahitian red, full interior. I wanted to buy it, $1100.00, asked mom if she would sign for a loan to buy a Ford model A. She said, "a Model A might be a good first car, that what we learned to drive on the farm. Let's go look at it". When we went to look at it, it was parked in the guys driveway, she didn't even get out of the car to look. She gave me one of those looks, only a mother can give and said, "forget it!'. I kept track of the car for about ten years, as it changed owners and appearance, then it was gone. Don't recall anything about the deuce.
