302 Ford in my 54 Merc used 2 quarts of oil to go 300 miles. Motor only has 34,00 miles on it. The PCV valve pulses and is ****ing oil out of the valve cover. I put a breather on that opening and I used no oil going 600 miles to the hunnertcarpileup. Compression is at 140 on all 8 cyl. I'm trying to locate any kind of a vacuum leak. My vacuum guage jumps 3 inches either side of 18. Any fix it suggestions would be appreciated.
The problem is not with the vacuum at all. The problem is that oil is getting near the PCV and getting ****ed out. Where is is mounted? In the valve cover with no baffle?
Here's a tutorial on reading a vacuum gauge. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm None of the stuff is written in stone, especially if you have a healthy cam.
Yes there is a baffle in the cover. The problem is that the vacuum isn't a steady vacuum, it pulses with the pistons or valves opening & closing. It's making the PCV valve flutter.
Regardless of the vacuum conditions, oil shouldn't be anywhere near the PCV to get ****ed up. Under normal conditions the valve stays open and ****s in air from the crankcase. The only thing the valve actually does is prevent a backfire from going into the crankcase.
Thanks everyone for the tech help. The post from Avete4me made me get out my very little used vacuum guage in the past 40 years and check things out again. I tryed several different PCV valves. Found one that didn't make the gauge move very much and adjusted on the carb mixter screws till I had very little movement of the needle and 19 inches of vacuum at idle.
