THANK GOD!! I'm not the only one that's fed up with all the greif I take off of my late model lol... I never had a car newer than a '65 until I bought a 2000 Ranger, that thing spent more time with the check engire light on than off. I finally got it all sorted out and my parents bought it off of me, i was back into a '64 for a daily then I had the bright idea that I needed another new car. I bought a 2002 Ranger ( I know glutton for punishment) and guess what, there was the soft glow of the omni-present check engine light to make me feel at home not long after I bought it! I got that fixed and a few months later taahhhdaaahhh!!! Check engine light is back on...OK I'm done, the '55 in my avitar will be my daily when it's finished.

thats all well and good, but i do not know of anyone who would do a tun up on an old car for 80 dollars. a good set of point are pushing 20 dollars retail, anything made in the last 10 to12 years will do 100,000 miles between plug changes, 10,000 miles are pushing it on old stuff. so you get one tune up for 450, or 10 tune ups for 80 if it was possible comes to 800 dollars. engines in older vehicles were tradtionaly used up and done at 100,000, its not uncommon to see 250,000 or so and no oil usage, leaks, etc. i like old cars though, the character, and they dont get lost in a parking lot. by the way that lincoln ls is nothin but a turd.......

Funny thing is my family had an '88 Ranger that we just couldn't kill, it was a great little truck, heck i used to see it running around town up untill a few years ago, that's what got me onto wanting a Ranger, boy was that a let down...twice.

What? You don't like donating extra money to oil companies  Oil executives gotta eat too ;) Yeah that is the one thing that is nice about them newer little beaters. I had a 95 Suzuki Swift that got 55 mpg. Even with the higher prices of parts it more than made up for it in awesome motorcycle gas mileage. Was a good little car until I few asleep at the wheel and hit a sign, a 4 inch pipe, and a heavy wooden fence post. Air bags went off and back to driving the truck I went.

Yeah no shit. I am damn lucky all it did was rack up the front end of a 125 dollar beater. I now know my limits, my cars come equipped with blankets and pillows now as standard equipment for when I need to take a nap (not while driving though).

I'm with you Zman. All cars require maintenance, but the more modern, the more sh*t they have that can and will go wrong, the less you can do your self and the more you have to pay someone else to do it. Old cars were made to last and parts were/are serviceable. Lets not even get into style!

It all boil's down to the over use of plastics. Plastic intakes, covers. sprockets, sensors, etc. And it takes oil to produce plastic. Plastic even stinks when you burn it. And what's up with all the cute plastic headlights and taillights? Go to a scrap yard with a truck load of plastic and ask them what they'll give you for it. Some can't be avoided like on wiring, but I want steel! OK my rant!

Once I finish up my 50 Styleline, I'm going to drive the hell out of it and never drive my Saturn POS ever again. That thing has been in the shop 5 or 6 times since we got it, and the warranty is about to run out. Up until yesterday, I swore I would never buy another *new* American car....malign them all you will, but Toyotas are the best thing going...like my wife's Tacoma. HOWEVER, a new report came out that says that Ford is now on par with them...if they are, and if/when I have to buy a new car, I'd much rather by American. Not if they're going to be POS like they have been for the past 10-15 years.

New cars are a F'ing joke.

    Road and Track Nov.2009
One year test on a Lexus IS F....Total miles driven in test.... 23,525 miles
Delivered price $64,178.00........trade in price at 1 year old $43,500.00 (Kelly Blue Book)
Thats $20,648.00 depreciation in 1 year!
    + 4375 gasoline
    + 3091 routine maintenance
    $28,144.00 total cost for 23,525 miles....cost per mile $1.20

New cars are a F'ing joke.

For $20,000.00 plus you should be able to drive a Hor Rod or Custom for more than a year!

Apart from everything else, think of the car that you could build for the price of a new middle range POS!

And if you were to change to an overdrive transmission from the 3 speed auto that's probably in there, you'd get over 20 mpg.

  24. doesn't most auto parts stores loan you tools if you pay a deposit? time to bite the bullit and purchase a "GOOD"factory manual. when i was buying a auctin cars snapped timing belt were common and unless it was a interferance motor i usually replaced the bad parts and away we went. library is great source for manuals and if your local library doesn't have one it can be shipped to your from another branch.

Coupster for president. A $25.00 selonoid is keeping a 2000 pontiac from moving in my driveway. No big on the price but gotta pull a fwd tranny to change it out. Not to mention the things only got 75000 on it and three of four windows is broke because of cheap parts. Love GM but Jesus this is a bunch of it ain't it.

I used to travel to Canada. In Ontario, they do just that every fall. Take it to a garage that sprays oil all over the bottom of the car. Park it out in the street for a few days to let it drip off and you're set. This was in the late 80's and early 90's so some one from the great white north can speak up as to whether they still do this.

    :confused::confused:

Or you could convert it to a Petronix Electronic Dizzy, hotter coil and, Wah Lah, tuneupes every 50,000 to 100,000 miles like a new car. JC Whitney has kits to add power windows, power locks, keyless entry etc if you need all the creature comforts. You can probably even add A/C to most cars for about a grand.

    Environment, Schmenvironment...

    LOL.

The only emission's control real cars have is a draft tube (if that).

Although I have to admit, it IS nice to turn the key and electronic Fuel injection fires right up and idles smooth no matter what the temperature is. Also, working in a dealership (sorry :( ) when we pull a modern car into the showroom, it barely stinks. I was at a Chevy dealer when they new Camaro came out and we pulled 3 older 69 Camaro's into the showroom and it took about an hour to get the gasoline smell out. And they were warmed up and not even on choke / fast idle. I'm sure if they still burned leaded gas, it would be even worse.

I like old cars as much of the rest of you, but I'm not going to totally throw away new cars.

How many of you take as good of care of your new cars as you do your old ones?
