i have been working on a putting together a 1948, 100 horse flatty with a hilborn electronic fuel injection setup. the engine was built by H&H in california. the trouble im having is oil is running out of a breather like thing on the botton front of the oil pan when the engine starts. i dont have a clue why. this is not just a drip, this is a stream. can some one give me some insight on whats going on, and how to correct the problem?
sounds like they left the standpipe out in the lifter valley. lets oil run down and out the vent another possibility is the pan gasket installed wrong not sealing the pan to front web
pan gasket is on right, im positive of that, STANDPIPE. i bet thats it. i will pull the intake tomorrow. thanks.
That is your exit breather off of the pan. I cannot see the inlet breather, or where you add the oil. Can it be that you have the engine sealed up and when it builds pressure from running it forces oil out below? Obviously, the thing is not going to work for you. I'll send you money for crating and shipping to get it out of your hair.
the oil fill is a screw in plug in the rear of the intake, you are right there is no way for this engine to breathe. i will have to drill the intake and add a breather. the engine has never been fired. the efi from hilborn is the first sold for this model engine, at least thats what they told me. the oil runs out before it ever starts. starting and staying running is a whole nother issue... i will be on the phone with andy alot tomorrow. i will p*** the offer along to the guy who owns it. thanks.
While putting in the standpipe make sure all the tin is in there; you need the little clip-ons along the oil gallery. You don't need the rear pipeage since you do not have breather or pushrod back there...while it is open, I would knock a 3/8 cup plug into pushrod bushing just in case oil from bearing gets tossed up into there. Any missing stuff in the valley allows in enough thrown oil to overwhelm valve guides and cause smoking. You can use an 8BA standpipe if you trim a little off the top.
alright guys, thanks for the help, it was the lack of a standpipe. tore it all down an put it all back. even polished the stacks. ok, now to move to the fuel injection problem. at least now i can start it with out loosing oil. again, thanks.
