NZ Hot Rod Mag cover scans.....H.A.M.B. friendly

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kiwi Kev, Oct 29, 2009.

  1. New Zealand Hot Rod magazine ( www.nzhotrodmag.co.nz ) just put out their 500th issue. To celebrate I thought I would scan some of the early covers to show some H.A.M.B. friendly cars from the early days of the magazine.

Here are the first three issues......

Unusual that when the negatives are reversed the steering wheel ends up on the right side of the car, yet the lettering stays correct. I wonder why?
    love the old shots. thanks.

  8. When I was 12 I was in Auckland city one night , my dad was taking me and my brothers to the movies. We were waiting to cross at a light when this Anglia pulls up at the light sounding bad***! That vision is still etched in my mind and that was a hell of a long time ago.

Thanks for posting, I started with issue 3 and still have ever issue since then.
The early 2 mags didn't reach the South Island in any great volume.
Rob Campbell told me this was due to them being printed by the Sunday Times
newspaper. Just read the 500th ..great!

    Some great covers
I started buying them in the early 70's when they became available in a paper shop in Sydney.
But unfortunatly they were only available for a few years before dissapearing
Then again in the mid 80's
    And reciently again
Some fantastic cars from over the years.

  19. I will scan and post more later.

  20. Thanks Kev, was just in NZ on weekend, grabbed one of those 500th issues, LOVE that brown 32 4 door...(yep, i did say that....;):D)

NZ rocks....more of those late 60's covers please Kev...

    Cheers,

Oh maw gawd, those covers are rad! This late sixties gem is my favorite. The pipes, the chromed fenders, the interior....crazy man.

All cool, but I especially dig June-July 1967. Gr*** roots, simple and atmospheric.

  23. The JuneJuly 68 issue with Larry Ferguson's altered on the cover, also has an insert shot of Ron Sylvester's 6 carb Chevy which was my pic, as was the article and pics on the car. Good grief... where has the time gone?
I also wrote a feature on Doug Smith's radical 36 coupe, around the same time.

I have been to a few second hand shops recently, and some have had old copies in there, I found a ring binder with NZHRM on the front, guess its to store stuff. I think its cool seeing all the old rods with no personalised plates, just adds something different I guess.

But sweet effort on the scans, that from your collection??

    Cool, thanks for sharing!
Can you scan some of the content too :)
I would love to read more about a couple of those rides. Was the blue coupe a "Little Deuce Coupe" lookalike?

    Interesting pricing of these magazines.

The first issue has a price of 2/6 or 25 cents and I have no idea what that means.

The second issue was priced at 36 cents. Any reason for the extra penny?

Well the 2/6 means 2 shillings and 6 pence, there were 12 pence per shilling and 20 shillings per pound, I know it's utterly absurd but that's the way it was until 1970 in Great Britain at least until sensible decimalization came into play. I reckon in NZ they switched to dollars.
