Thanks for the pics. 57 Olds are one of my all time favorites. Love to see what you have in mind for your 58 custom.

I really like the roof swap idea. You're putting a cool roof on a very cool car. 58's were overlooked for a long time. Those photos were a great thing to wake up to today. Thanx!

i think, for obvious reasons as well as to avoid confusion, we should discuss the ch***is lines of gm circa 1955-59ish.

Here is what i think the categories are:

    "B" body = impala(caprice), bonneville (catalina), 88(rocket?), Lesabre(roadmaster?)

    "C" body = 98 (rocket?), electra, deville/fleetwood.

NOTE: i wasn't around in 58 so the ch***is lines seem very blury to me although i can almost swear that Chev, BOP all had the same body. At least that's what it looks like.

In fact, i still find it hard to believe that GM even made cars before 55.

    Re: Body lineage:

    55/56: Chevy and Pontiac share

Olds and small Buick (Special/Century) share

Big Buick (Super/Roadmaster) and Cadillac share

    57

    Chevy and Pontiac share

Olds and small Buick (Special/Century) share

Big Buick (Super/Roadmaster) and Cadillac share (roof on Buick is ribbed)

    58

    Chevy and Pontiac share

Olds and small Buick (Special/Century) share

Big Buick (Super/Roadmaster/Limited) and Cadillac share (the nipped in body line is slightly different on the Buick to the Caddy).

    59/60

    Chevy and Pontiac share

Olds 88 and small Buick (Le Sabre/Invicta) share

Olds 98, big Buick (Electra/Electra 225) and Cadillac share

Also worth noting, all 59 GM cars share the same door front door body style for body style on account of the whole range being redesigned from a blank piece of paper to driving out of the showroom door in 18 months, after the designers witnessed the '57 'Forward Look' finned cars from Chrysler, rather than building the planned facelifted 58 cars as per the GM 3 year cycle!

The door and windshield was actually designed by the Buick Division.
